Can dogs catch colds from humans?

A blind puppy was found abandoned and tied to a pole in the midst of Hurricane Milton. It’s hard to imagine such a vulnerable pup in this position, but thankfully, the amazing team at Linus & Friends put on their superhero capes and came to her rescue.

Linus & Friends, a nonprofit animal rescue group based in New York City and Central Florida, shared Ginger Spice’s (what a name!) story on TikTok and captured the hearts of thousands.

When Ginger Spice was rescued, she was described as “skinny, sick, and pleading for help.” A spokesperson for Linus & Friends shared that she seems to have been born blind. While the person who abandoned her may not have seen her worth, everyone at the rescue—and all of us reading her story—certainly do.

The rescue provided her with medical care and placed her in a loving foster home until Ginger Spice was quickly adopted by a family in upstate New York. Her new parents even have experience caring for blind pit bulls — it sounds like she’s found just the place she belongs.

Is your dog a licker? Honestly, most are, though there are exceptions (I have one who rarely licks, so when she kisses you, it’s special). For most of us, their kisses are welcome, though sometimes we wouldn’t mind a little break—especially with those obsessive lickers (I’ve got one of those, too!). Do you ever wonder why they’re so intent on licking us? Let’s find out!

1. Love and Affection. Ever wonder if those slobbery licks are doggy kisses? You’re probably right! Licking releases feel-good chemicals in a dog’s brain, making them feel calm and connected. So when they lick you, it’s like their way of saying, "I love you!"

2. "Hey, Pay Attention!" Sometimes, licking is just a polite (or not-so-polite) way of saying, “Notice me!” Whether they’re hungry, want to play, or just need a little love, that lick often translates to “Hey, human!”

3. Grooming Genes. Pups groom each other with licks, so why not you, too? If your dog is licking you, they may be treating you like family—cleaning up after a long day of… well, whatever they think you’ve been up to!

4. Exploring the World. Dogs use their tongues like we use our hands. Licking you might be their way of exploring you, picking up on your scent, and learning more about where you’ve been (and making sure you haven’t been cheating on them with other dogs).

5. The Taste Factor. Believe it or not, you might just taste good! A hint of salt, a bit of lotion… to your dog, you’re like a walking snack. Plus, they may even be hoping you’ll share your lunch with them—in the wild, puppies lick their mom’s face to encourage her to “share” food by regurgitating!
