Why Do Dogs Put Their Paw on You?

When your dog places a paw on you, it’s usually their way of reaching out—literally. It can be a request for attention, a sign of affection, or even a gentle reminder that they’re hungry.

Many dogs also paw during moments of calm, almost like a quiet handshake. This kind of touch helps strengthen their bond with you and offers comfort for them, too. In some cases, pawing is an instinct left over from puppyhood, when nudging was how they got their mother’s care.

Certain breeds are more prone to using their paws, especially retrievers and working dogs that rely on touch in their natural instincts.

No matter the reason, when a dog rests their paw on your arm or leg, it’s usually their way of saying: “I’m here, with you.”

Dog of the Day: Playful Puppy Betty

Meet Betty—a survivor, a snuggler, and an all-around amazing dog. She and her two-day-old puppies were abandoned in freezing temperatures, but thanks to a good Samaritan, they were rescued and brought to safety. After weeks in foster care, all of Betty’s pups found homes, and Betty found hers too—finding her forever family at the Tacoma Humane Society.

Now 4 years old, Betty is thriving. She’s been keeping up with her training and social play, mastering her good citizenship one paw at a time. And she’s got a playful streak too—when there’s no one to toss a stick for her, she just throws it herself.

Thank you to our reader, Julie, for sending in a picture of Betty. Give your pup the spotlight by submitting them for the dog of the day!

Dalmatians and Their Spots

Dalmatians are known for their bold black and white spots, but here’s the twist—you won’t see a single one when they’re born. Dalmatian puppies start out with pure white coats, almost like little blank canvases.

Their famous spots begin to show between 2–4 weeks of age, and by then, each pup’s unique pattern starts to emerge. What’s fascinating is that while their fur looks spotless at birth, their skin already carries the pigment that determines where those iconic markings will appear.

It’s a reminder that even our most recognizable dogs don’t start out looking like themselves—they grow into their spots, literally.
