How to Keep Your Dog Safe in Extreme Heat
When the weather gets hot, itâs easy for misinformation to put dogs at risk. Hereâs what every owner should know:
Shaving fur doesnât keep dogs cooler â Their coat regulates temperature and prevents sunburn.
Dogs can get sunburned â Especially light-colored, thin-coated, or pink-skinned pups. Use pet-safe sunscreen on ears, nose, and belly.
They wonât always stop when overheated â Schedule walks for mornings or evenings and avoid intense midday play.
Extra water is essential â Most dogs need about 1 oz. per pound daily, more in heat.
Dogs donât sweat like humans â Panting is their main cooling method.
Heatstroke is real and dangerous â Watch for heavy panting, drooling, red gums, weakness, or collapse. Seek vet care immediately.
Not all dogs are natural swimmers â Always supervise near water, no matter their skill.
Staying alert to these facts can help your dog stay happy, healthy, and safe all summer long.

Dog of the Day: Bella, Life-Saving Companion
Meet Bella, a devoted pup with a rare and extraordinary gift. Sheâs been detecting her humanâs dangerously low blood sugars for 11 years. On their very first vacation together, she barked nonstop until her person pulled over. Turns out, Bella wasnât asking for a potty break; she was sounding the alarm on a low blood sugar episode. That moment marked the beginning of her lifesaving work.
Bellaâs alerts have come again and again, always just in time. For people with diabetes who are hypoglycemia-unaware, these lows can strike without warning and be life-threatening. Teaching a dog to detect them isnât easy, which makes Bellaâs instinct even more remarkable.
She turns 12 this month and remains a guardian angel with paws. Thank you to her human, a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, for sharing her story. Bella is a true hero.

Thank you to our reader, Deborah, for sending in a picture of Bowen. Give your pup the spotlight by submitting them for the Dog of the Day!

Stray Dogs Who Ride the Subway
Every morning in Moscow, some of the cityâs savviest commuters have four legs and fur. These stray dogs have learned to ride the subway from the suburbs to the city center, hopping off at the same stops each day before returning home at night.
Scientists believe the dogs navigate the sprawling metro using scent, sound, and even timing their journeys between stops. Theyâve figured out how to ride escalators, avoid the busiest train cars, and curl up under seats without disturbing passengers, often preferring the quiet of the first or last car.
Their commuting habit began after economic shifts in the 1990s pushed jobs and food sources downtown, while abandoned factories in the suburbs provided shelter. Riding the metro became the most efficient way to bridge the two.
Moscowâs dogs arenât alone. From a UK bus-riding cat to a Toronto subway pigeon, animals around the world have learned to use transit.
