Prevent Your Puppy From Nipping and Biting
We might be celebrating Shark Week on TV, but you don’t want your dog getting any ideas about taking a bite out of anything. Puppies are known to have incredibly sharp little teeth, and they explore the world using their mouths. So, how do you help them learn not to bite?
It’s important to help your puppy learn what they should do instead of telling them no when nipping and biting.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
Puppy-proof your house. Remove anything that might be tempting and at their level. Clear your floors and low shelves of items and use gates to keep them in a smaller space at first.
Have a collection of “legal” chew items. Buy some Kongs, rugged chew toys, and Nylabones that your dog is allowed to chew. Don’t use items that closely resemble off-limits things because it could confuse the dog.
Wear tight-legged pants. Loose material moves a lot around your ankles, which is right at puppy level. If you wear tighter pants, it will reduce the movement and be less likely to attract their attention.
Be ready to redirect. Have a toy in your hand to offer up when you see them going for your feet. If they start bouncing towards your legs, give them a toy instead.
Ensure they are getting exercise and stimulation. Puppies need to direct their energy somewhere. By providing enough walks and mental stimulation, your puppy will be tired and more relaxed at home.
Learn your dog’s limits. Puppies can be overstimulated and that can cause an increase in nipping and biting. Watch how long it takes your dog to ramp up in excitement and try to avoid those maximum levels.
Beware of the witching hour. There will likely be a few times during the day when your puppy is over-aroused and more likely to nip. Provide them with a stuffed Kong or something to occupy them during those spurts of energy.
Train the puppy. Practice commands and build the bond. Puppies are like sponges and will start to retain information. Work on Focus, Sit, and Down to start.
If you love tuning in to the Shark Week content, maybe you’ve considered naming your next pet something related to these sea creatures. Here are a few ideas to help you start brainstorming:
Apex
Fin
Jaws
Shredder
Tiger
Bruce
Jabberjaw
Squalo
Tiburon
