It’s National Mutt Day, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate Nimble the Dog. She’s the first mixed-breed dog to win the Westminster Dog Show Masters Agility Championship. Nimble is a Border Collie-Papillion mix and was only the fifth dog ever to complete the event in under 30 seconds.

Border Collies often win the category, and Nimble’s handler worked with last year’s champion, Truant. Cynthia Hornor is no stranger to this event. She has raised multiple dogs to master this event, but she makes sure that all of her dogs are pets first. When they focus on training, they have such a strong bond that the dogs perform better.

Hornor hopes that this special win will help change the opinions on mixed breeds. They can be just as fast as purebred dogs.

A mutt is a dog that is not officially recognized as one breed. They have traits of multiple breeds and are often a mystery. They don’t come from intentional breeding, and there isn’t often any human interference. The term mutt has a negative connotation that stems from the 1800s when people used it in a derogatory way.

Mutts are different than designer breeds. When two breeds are mixed together for specific results, like being hypoallergenic or getting specific physical traits, they are referred to as designer dogs. Because it’s intentional, it’s different than the mutts.

Caring for mutts is no different than any dog. They need regular vet visits, a balanced diet, and regular exercise. And, of course, they deserve so much love and affection. It’s amazing to learn more about these pups and discover their natural abilities and traits.
