At least my dogs don't judge how I spend my Friday night in. They just give me a nod like, 'Hey beautiful, you deserve that second glass of wine, and while we're at it, let's order you a pizza.’”

Some Dogs Love Water More Than Others

Just like humans, every dog is unique in their interests. Some dogs love swimming and playing in the water, while others may not. It can be due to the natural instincts of their breed or just their individual personality. If you’re interested in a dog that loves to play in the water, you might want to get one of these 16 water-loving breeds.

  • Labrador retriever

  • Golden retriever

  • Chesapeake Bay retriever

  • Standard poodle

  • Portuguese water dog

  • Newfoundland

  • German shorthaired pointed

  • Schipperke

  • English setter

  • Brittany

  • Boykin spaniel

  • Nova Scotia duck-tolling retriever

  • Irish water spaniel

  • Curly-coated retriever

  • American water spaniel

  • Flat-coated retriever

Getting one of these breeds doesn’t guarantee that your pup will love water. Slow introductions can be key to helping them get used to it. Use rewards to celebrate them getting in the water and use toys to make it fun. Hopefully, you’ll all be splashing and enjoying the water together soon!

How to Help Rehydrate Your Dog

Whether or not your dog loves swimming and playing in the water, you definitely need to make sure your dog is drinking enough water and staying hydrated. When playing in the heat of the summer, dogs can become dehydrated, potentially leading to health problems.

It’s easy to recognize and prevent as long as you are aware of it. Some of the signs to watch for include heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, sunken eyes, not urinating, or possibly vomiting and diarrhea. If you notice any of these, it’s possible your dog is dehydrated. There are a few proven ways to help rehydrate them immediately.

  1. Give your dog fresh water. Make sure their bowl is full of fresh, clean water.

  2. Try adding flavor to their water. Dogs love a splash of low-sodium beef or chicken broth. This will get their attention and draw them to their bowl.

  3. Increase the amount of wet food. Swapping for some wet food helps replenish fluids while also giving your dog essential nutrients.

  4. Add some broth to their food. Liquid in the broth can help your dog absorb some fluids into the body.

  5. Give your dog frozen treats. Ice cubes or frozen watermelon are great options to help your pup cool down.

  6. Offer vegetables to your dog. Cucumbers and celery are packed with moisture, so they can be a great treat option for your pup to help them get some hydration.

  7. Make homemade rehydrating treats. There are great recipes for mixtures of fruits and vegetables that you can freeze and save for your dog when they need a little energy and hydration boost.

  8. Keep them from drinking from puddles, toilets, or other potentially contaminated sources. These spots can lead to illnesses. Keep a clean bowl and water ready to go.

  9. Visit the vet. If you believe that your dog is dehydrated and not bouncing back, get your pup to the vet as soon as possible. The vet can assess your pup’s health and give you some ideas for helping.
