Toothless' Transformation
Toothless is a senior Chihuahua who was rescued from an unhealthy hoarding situation along with 46 other dogs. He was discovered outside the home, and itās believed that he didnāt have much human interaction during his ten years of life. Madeleine Cantrell worked for the Houston Humane Society and heard about these dogs. She couldnāt resist adopting Toothless.
The poor pup tested positive for heartworm and tapeworm and was infested with fleas. His name came from the fact that he was missing all of his teeth. Now, heās been treated for everything and is recovering nicely. He joined a home with four other rescue dogs and has become close with the Maltese mix named Sunshine. Madeleine says heās glued to her often and loves to be held.
Senior dogs are often overlooked at shelters, but Madeleine uses her social media platform to raise awareness about these loving animals. Follow along at @theseniordogsquad to see more.
The Best Tools for Cleaning Your Dog's Teeth
Toothless no longer has to worry about his teeth, but most dogs have a mouthful of teeth that owners need to help them clean. Dental health for dogs is more than just better-smelling breath. Dental diseases can lead to other health problems if they are not addressed. So, what can dog owners do? There are two important actionsāan annual checkup with the vet and regular cleanings at home.
When looking for the best products, look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council registered seal (VOHC). Here are a few other tools to use to keep your dogās teeth clean and healthy:
Toothbrush with soft bristles
Enzymatic toothpaste that fights tartar and plaque build-up
Finger brushes for dogs who arenāt comfortable with regular brushes
Dental wipes when dogs wonāt accept any type of brush easily
Dental chews and bones
Food that targets oral health
Additives for food and water
If youāve never worked on your dogās teeth, start today and help them get more comfortable and familiar with the process. Use these tools and talk to your vet about other options.

How to Feed a Dog Without Teeth
If your dog needs teeth removed at some point in life, it doesnāt mean they canāt still enjoy mealtimes. But there are a few things that you can do to make it easier for them. The easiest thing is to hydrate their kibble. Add water to their food dish to soften up the hard kibble bites. You can add a little more flavor to entice them with broth.
Canned soft dog food is another option for dogs with missing teeth. Brands formulate the food to include all the nutrients your dog needs. You might need to try one or two flavors to find one that your dog loves. Some dog owners opt to make their own homemade soft food. Great recipes are available, including lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, grains, and possibly supplements.
Gum health continues to be important even if dogs no longer have their teeth. Keep brushing their gums with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Your dog will appreciate any help you can give them to keep their mouths clean and their bellies full.
