The Story of a Mutt and a Marine
Nubs was a wild dog living along the Iraq/Syria border. He met Dennis, a marine on duty, and they bonded instantly. The dog was upset when Dennis and his unit had to leave for a different fort about 70 miles away. Nubs just couldn’t be separated from Dennis and followed him through the desert.
Dennis knew he couldn’t keep the dog with him at a military post, but he established a fund called Save Nubs and raised $2,000 in small donations that would allow him to send Nubs to San Diego, where he’d be returned when his tour was over. The money was raised, and the pup was sent to stay with his friends. Dennis and Nubs were reunited at Camp Pendleton just six months after meeting, and now they live happily together. This story is available as a children’s book, so you can share the joy with others!
Keep Your BBQ Safe for the Dogs
‘Tis the season for backyard barbeques and cookouts with your friends. If you want to keep things friendly for the dogs in your life, there are a few dangerous things that you should avoid.
Bones might seem like a dog-friendly item, but there’s a difference between the bones you can pick up at a pet store and those in ribs and pork chops on the grill. These bones can break off and cause issues in the esophagus or intestines. Another thing to keep away from dogs is fatty meats and chicken skins. The fat content is too high for their typical diets. If you want to give them a little snack, keep a few dog treats outside or share a few small carrots.
In addition to the foods to avoid, keep your dog away from the grill to avoid burns. They might be drawn to the smells, but they must stay away from them. Keep the garbage and scraps out of their reach as well. Your dog will love hanging out with you and your friends, and you’ll feel better knowing that you’ve removed some of the dangers to them.

Make a Watermelon Dog Cake
If you want to make something special for your pup for the Fourth of July BBQs you’re hosting this weekend, we’ve got this easy treat that your dog will love. It’s simple and tasty, plus the cool fruit will be great on a hot day.
Watermelon Cake
You’ll need: Seedless watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon
Cut the watermelon into three different-sized circles, all about 2-3 inches thick. Ensure the rind is completely removed.
Stack the watermelon pieces on top of each other.
Use a melon baller to cut small shapes or balls of cantaloupe and honeydew. Add these as decoration to the watermelon slices.
