Did you know…

What is the breed that has won the most Westminster Dog Show?

(scroll to the bottom to find the answer!)

And The Winner Is...

The 2024 Westminster Dog Show took place in May, and Sage the Miniature Poodle won the Best in Show award. This was the 148th dog show and the second year in a row that the event took place at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. Sage is from Houston, Texas, and competed against some tough opponents. She also goes by her show name, GCHG CH Surrey Sage. Her handler is Kaz Hosaka. Congrats to all the dogs who competed!

Do You Want to Show Your Dog?

If you’ve watched the Westminster Dog Show and dreamed of showing your dog, it’s never too late to start working towards this goal. The purpose of dog shows is to evaluate breeding stock. To show a dog, you have to be willing to work within the breed standards that the judges will be expecting. If you can handle that, read on for an overview of how to get involved in dog shows.

  • Register your puppy with the AKC. You should have puppy litter registration forms from your breeder. Check to see if your pup was a limited registration, as you’ll need to return it to the breeder and have them change it to a full registration.

  • Work on the three core behaviors that show dogs must learn. They need to be able to “gait,” “stack,” and be examined by judges.

  • Conformation classes are the best tools to work with your dog on their show prep.

  • Consider hiring a professional handler. Rumors say that the dog shows are sometimes political, and professional dog handlers are favored to win. You don’t need a professional, but it’s worth considering if you want to win the bigger shows.

  • Determine the best class to enter your puppy in. The class is divided into a few categories based on age, and it’s good to show in the puppy class while you can.

  • Get matched with your local kennel club. The AKC will match you, and this will be like a dress rehearsal before you go to your real show.

  • Learn all the etiquette for dog shows. It’s important to keep your dog under control at all times and never allow it to greet another. Be polite to the judges, even if they aren’t impressed. They are simply giving feedback based on breed standards.

Best of luck to you and your pup! Maybe you’ll be featured in a future Daily Dig edition as a dog show winner!
