Spotify launched a Pet Playlist feature four years ago after sharing a statistic that 71% of pet parents play music for their pets. But what kind of music is right for your pet?

Dr. Lisa Radosta is a vet behaviorist and helps to advise Zoundz Music for Pets, which helps to reduce animal anxiety. They help produce music for animal shelters and study the impact that music has on dogs. The initial studies showed that dogs sleep best to classical music. The studies measured heart rate and cortisol levels in saliva. It compared classical, pop, heavy metal, and other music genres. Classical was best, but even better were audiobooks where someone is reading out loud.

Frequencies also impact how much animals enjoy music. Dogs’ ears are built differently than human ears. They hear twice as much as humans. Long, sustained sounds are calming for dogs. If you want to try leaving playlists on for your dog, watch how they respond when you try different options. They may have preferences that you can see when observing their behaviors.

Artificial intelligence is seeping into every part of our lives as scientists test its capabilities. Researchers at the University of Michigan are using AI to understand more about a dog’s bark and what it can tell us.

One thing being tested is the ability to identify a dog’s age, gender, and breed based on its bark. They also want to determine whether the dog is playful or angry. This research could open some new windows into how we understand our animals and what they might be trying to communicate. Using a machine designed to analyze human speech, they’ve been able to start reading the sounds from pups.

If you’re convinced that your dog needs their own special playlist to enjoy, Spotify is a great tool that will help you make your own mix. Here are the steps to set up a playlist:

1. Go to the Pet Playlists section on the Spotify website.

2. Pick your pet, choosing from dog, cat, iguana, hamster, or bird.

3. Choose traits that best describe your pet’s personality. Spotify will choose songs that fit those descriptors. They always mix in music that you have listened to so you can enjoy it alongside them.

4. Add your pet’s name and photo and it will become the cover of the playlist.

5. Listen and share with your friends and their pets.
