Walking your dog shouldn’t feel like repeating the same loop on autopilot. A few small additions can make the whole routine feel fresh, for you and your dog. Try weaving in short obedience moments between stretches of relaxed sniffing. A couple sits, downs, or “watch me” cues add structure without turning the walk into a training marathon. Many dogs also love tiny challenges, like hopping onto a low wall, balancing on a log, or exploring a new surface.

Changing the scenery helps, too. Swap the neighborhood loop for a quiet meadow, a forest trail, or even a calm city block if your dog is comfortable.
