Do Dogs Actually Watch TV?

If your dog sits next to you on movie night, eyes glued to the screen, you’re not imagining things. Dogs really can watch TV now. Thanks to higher-resolution screens that flicker less, their eyes can finally focus on moving images instead of seeing a blur.

Research shows dogs mostly enjoy watching other dogs (relatable), followed by animals in general. Humans, however, ranked ninth out of seventeen categories (a bit humbling). Dogs are especially drawn to fast motion, which explains why action and sci-fi might keep their attention longer than slow dramas.

That said, most dogs don’t sit through an entire movie. They tend to watch in short bursts, about the length of a commercial. Some even approach the screen to “check” if what they’re seeing is real. Scientists believe it’s curiosity and genuine enjoyment that motivates dogs to tune into TV screens.

So when your dog perks up at The Lion King, it could be curiosity, excitement, or simply their way of joining in on movie night.

Dog of the Day, Daisy

Meet Daisy, a 12-year-old golden retriever who’s clearly excited for spooky season. Dressed to impress as a very convincing cow, Daisy belongs to Daily Dig reader Penny and has our whole team smiling. We rate the costume a 10/10.

Want your dog featured? Whether they’re in costume or just being their adorable self, send us a photo and a few lines about your pup. We’d love to spotlight them in an upcoming Dog of the Day!

Cute Dog Videos Boost Your Mood

If you needed another reason to watch dog videos guilt-free, science just gave you one. A recent study led by researchers from UBC Okanagan and Brock University found that watching short dog videos can meaningfully reduce stress, even when viewed virtually.

The five-minute clips featured therapy dogs and asked participants to imagine petting the dogs while reflecting on how they felt. More than a thousand people took part, and across the board, stress levels dropped noticeably: from 3.33 to 2.53 for students and from 3.07 to 2.43 for other adults.

Researchers say this approach could make stress relief more accessible for busy people or those hesitant to seek help in person. So next time you’re deep in a TikTok scroll watching golden retrievers and corgis, consider it research-backed relaxation.
