What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

Jack Russell Terrier Brings Love Back to Mom’s Life

Within 18 months, Pam navigated a challenging journey marked by significant changes in her life. During this hard time, Pam’s cat, Zachary, became her steadfast companion and brought warmth and joy back into a house that had felt too quiet.

And sometimes, the universe knows just when to step in. Pam came across a post about a small dog abandoned in the countryside. His floppy ears and innocent face immediately tugged at Pam’s heart. With no one to claim him, she knew she had to meet him.

The next morning, Pam picked up a frail Jack Russell Terrier from where he’d been staying in a lonely kennel. He was fearful, unsure, and in need of love. She whispered to him, "You're safe now, little buddy." His eyes locked onto Pam’s as he slowly crept into her arms, trembling but trusting. And just like that, he became Buddy.

The early days weren’t without their challenges—separation anxiety, accidents, and destructive habits—but Buddy’s sweet, loving nature made it impossible for Pam not to fall for him.

As Buddy settled into his new home, he formed an unlikely friendship with Pam’s cat, Zachary. Together, they’d patrol the yard, with Buddy even protecting the home from unwanted critters. It became clearer than ever: Buddy hadn’t just filled the void—he revived both Pam’s heart and home.

Now, nine years later, Buddy is a bit grayer but still full of life and Pam’s loyal companion. Pam shared with Daily Dig that she’s forever grateful for that post, the stranger who shared it, and her mother's love. Buddy didn’t just come into her life—he saved it.

A Look Back On Presidential Pups

Everyone loves dogs—even U.S. presidents! While we won’t cover all presidents and their pups (there’s a lot), we’ll highlight some of the most memorable ones!

George Washington bred over 30 American Foxhounds, including Sweet Lips, Drunkard, Tipler, and Tipsy (there’s definitely a theme here!). His love for hounds helped shape the American Foxhound breed as we know it today.

Theodore Roosevelt was a true animal lover with a lot of pets. His dogs included a Saint Bernard named Rollo, a Pekingese named Manchu (his daughter’s), a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Sailor Boy, and a Bull Terrier named Pete, who made headlines after tearing the pants of a French ambassador!

Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Scottish Terrier, Fala, were inseparable. Fala was so popular that he received fan mail—supposedly even more than many presidents! FDR also had a Bullmastiff named Blaze, two Irish Setters, a Bulldog, and even a Great Dane named President.

Dwight D. Eisenhower had a Weimaraner named Heidi, who was famously banned from the White House after an accident on the floor. His Scottish Terriers Caacie and Telek were also part of the family.

John F. Kennedy’s dogs included a Welsh Terrier named Charlie, a German Shepherd named Clipper, and an Irish Wolfhound named Wolf. The Kennedy family also had Pushinka, a mixed-breed dog gifted to them by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev.

Gerald Ford had a Golden Retriever named Liberty, who gave birth to a litter of puppies at the White House. One of the puppies was even trained as a guide dog for the blind!

What Does Life for a Dog at the White House Look Like?

Being a presidential pup has its perks—imagine having the White House lawn as your personal backyard! But what does life look like for these lucky dogs? Who takes care of them? What do they get up to? Let’s take a peek.

These dogs get to roam the halls of the White House, accompany the president or first lady on outings like golf trips, vacations, and charity events, and even enjoy some downtime in the Oval Office.

Most presidents took care of their fur babies themselves. George H.W. and Barbara Bush bathed their dogs in the residence shower, and Michelle Obama took Bo and Sunny, their Portuguese Water Dogs, on walks along trails near the White House. And one time, Ronald Reagan walked his Bouvier des Flandres, Lucky, and was nearly dragged across the Rose Garden (even presidents get pulled around by their dogs sometimes)!

When extra help is needed, there's no shortage of willing hands. With residence staff and White House aides on hand, there's always someone available to walk the dogs, take them to the vet, or give out some extra belly rubs and treats. It turns out, life as a White House dog is as great as it sounds!
