Design Hacks for a Home That’s Beautiful and Built for Pets

Sharing your home with a dog (or three) doesn’t mean giving up on style. A few smart design choices can keep your space looking great and stand up to the messiest paws.

Skip wall-to-wall carpet if you can—pet hair, muddy prints, and accidents are no match for hardwood or tile. Performance fabrics like microfiber or indoor-outdoor materials can make your couch last longer (and smell fresher). In the kitchen or entryway, washable rugs are your new best friend.

If your dog’s crate is an eyesore, consider a ā€œfurniture-styleā€ one that blends in with your decor. Some even double as side tables or benches.

Built-in feeding stations, mudroom dog showers, and pet-proof cabinets? Not just fancy—totally functional. These little upgrades can make a big difference in daily life with a pup.

Clever Decor Tricks Every Dog Parent Needs

If your living room feels more like your dog’s den than your own, you’re not alone. But pet-friendly doesn’t have to mean plastic mats and sad slipcovers. With a few tweaks, your space can handle muddy paws and still look great.

Start with the sofa—slipcovers in tight-weave fabrics like velvet or canvas are easier to clean and can hide scratches better than loose knits. Washable rugs are another game changer. They catch messes, protect your floors, and roll into the washing machine when needed.

Don’t forget the small stuff. Upgraded pet bowls, storage bins, and even litter box covers can blend into your space instead of standing out.

Even in a rental, smart design choices go a long way. Your dog might not care about the color palette, but you deserve to.

We have two dogs – Bocephus, the grumpy big brother in the back and Rosie, the very concerned tri-paw in the front. When this photo was taken we had just moved into our new home and these little trouble makers were still getting used to the place.

This Eight-Pound Dog Survived the Outback

Valerie wasn’t built for the wild. At just eight pounds, this miniature dachshund was more used to cuddles and cafĆ©s than dodging eagles and venomous snakes. But after vanishing from a campsite on Kangaroo Island in late 2023, she defied all expectations.

For 16 months, Valerie survived alone on the rugged Australian island—an area roughly 75 times the size of Manhattan. She evaded traps, avoided people, and somehow found enough food and water to keep going. Volunteers tried everything from roast chicken to tuna to lure her in.

Then, finally, it happened: Valerie was caught and reunited with her owners.

Experts say her breed’s boldness and natural instincts likely played a role. Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers—they’re built tough, even if they look like little sausages in sweaters.
