There’s a festival dedicated entirely to celebrating and worshiping dogs!

In Nepal, Kukur Tihar is part of the five-day Tihar festival, where dogs get the royal treatment they deserve.

On this special day, dogs—whether pets, strays, or even service dogs—are honored with flower garlands, delicious treats, and a sacred vermillion mark on their foreheads. It’s a powerful symbol of love and respect, acknowledging all they do as protectors and loyal companions.

Even Nepal’s Armed Police Force joins in, honoring their service dogs with ceremonies at the canine center in Kathmandu. These dedicated pups, decked out in garlands, show off their skills by jumping through rings of fire, fetching on command, and performing other impressive tasks. Ram Narayan KC, deputy branch chief of the canine division, shared heartfelt words: “Today, we honor these dogs for their invaluable contributions, as they determinedly assist in keeping us safe.” These pups assist with detecting explosives and rescuing people during natural disasters—true heroes!

Tihar continues with different celebrations each day: honoring crows, then dogs, then cows once again, before moving to the goddess Lakshmi and family bonds. But for dog lovers, Kukur Tihar is pure magic. It’s a joyful reminder that dogs are not just pets—they’re cherished family, guardians, and heroes.
