Are Dogs and Cats Really Mortal Enemies?
The idea that dogs and cats inherently hate each other is a myth that cartoons and movies have kept alive for years (Iâm thinking Garfield and Odieâremember those two?!). In reality, any perceived 'hatred' or animosity isnât instinctual. There are plenty of dog and cat besties out in the world! The relationship between pups and cats is shaped by a variety of factors â letâs get into it!
Natural Instincts. Dogs were bred to chase and hunt small animals, especially ones that flee, while cats instinctively run from potential threats. This can lead to misunderstandings between the two.
Communication Differences. Dogs and cats communicate in completely different ways. Honestly, it's like theyâre living in different worlds when it comes to understanding each other, which is probably why we have so many 'team dog' and 'team cat' people. Dogs greet each other by sniffing butts, but to a cat, that can feel downright threatening or disturbing. These misinterpretations can create tension, especially if either the pup or the cat has a stubborn personality and holds a grudge.
Social Behaviors. Dogs are social animals that love being part of a pack, while cats tend to be more independent. A cat might be wary of a dog, either because of its size or overly friendly behavior, while the dog may not understand the catâs need for space. We all know personal space isnât exactly a dogâs strong suit. Letâs face it, we probably have a pup like that ourselves!
Introduction Process. How you introduce a dog and a cat can set the tone for their entire relationship. If they grow up together as babies, theyâll naturally be more comfortable with each other. But if youâre introducing a new cat to your pup (or vice versa), slow and steady wins the race. Give each pet a safe space and create a calm environment for their first meetingâwhether that means training your dog to obey commands like "sit" or "stay." A hyper pup can easily overwhelm a cat. Then again, you never knowâmy 90 lb dog used to run away from his tiny kitten friend!
Individual Personalities. Every dog and cat has its own unique personality. Calmer dogs, especially those used to living with other pets, often make great cat siblings. But then again, there are plenty of dogs and cats who absolutely adore each other and create their own little games and fun together. It just depends on their dynamic!
Take all of these factors into account, add a little patience, and most cats and dogs can peacefully coexist. Some might even become best friends, playing and napping together. So, if you're adding one or the other into your home, don't stress about the mythical rivalryâjust give them time to adjust and they'll likely surprise you with the sweetest bond youâll ever see!
Do you have dogs and cats that are best buds? Weâd love to hear about their adorable friendship!
Why Your Dog Licks Their Paws - And How to Help
Excessive paw licking in dogs can sometimes signal a number of things, but donât worryâitâs often a mix of discomfort, anxiety, or health issues that can be addressed! If your pup is on a licking spree, letâs explore some common reasons and how you can help them out:
Allergies: Just like us, dogs can be sensitive to environmental stuff like pollen or even certain foods, which can make their skin super itchy. A quick trip to the vet can help pinpoint the allergen, and they might suggest some meds or changes in diet.
Dry skin: This pesky issue can lead to all sorts of irritation, making your dog reach for their paws. Keeping their skin moisturized with pet-safe lotions can do wonders, and regular grooming helps kick dirt and irritants to the curb!
Yeast infections: These can pop up between toes or on paw pads, causing some serious itchiness. If you suspect a yeast infection, a vet visit will get your dog the antifungal treatment they need.
Anxiety or stress: Dogs often lick their paws as a way to self-soothe. Identifying the source of their anxiety can make a world of difference, whether itâs training, calming aids, or a chat with an animal behaviorist.
Pain or injury: A cut, thorn, or even arthritis might have your dog licking their paws. Checking for any visible injuries is a must, and if you see anything concerning, the vet is your best bet.
Nutritional deficiencies: If your pupâs not getting the right nutrients, it might lead to skin issues. Ensure theyâre munching on a high-quality diet, and your vet can help you pick the best one.
Habit of licking: If your furry friend is licking for no good reason, working with a vet or a behaviorist can help them break that cycle. Using positive reinforcement and distraction techniques can work wonders!
If your dog is licking their paws a bit too much and youâre scratching your head about it, donât hesitate to reach out to your vet for a thorough check-up and treatment plan.
Have you ever dealt with a pup who couldnât stop licking their paws? Weâd love to hear your stories and how you helped them!

DOTD - Meet Rowdie
This cute little boy is Rowdieâyes, heâs just as rowdy as his name suggests! His mom found him in a shelter and says it was love at first sight. Rowdieâs previous owner did an amazing job training him, and although they had to part ways, his mom is incredibly grateful for the training and for Rowdie himself. She loves him more than words can express, and we totally get why. Just look at that face! Thanks for sharing Rowdie with us.
