If you’ve ever watched your dog twitch, kick, or softly bark in their sleep, it’s hard not to wonder what’s going on in their head. The good news is, dogs really do dream, and it’s probably a lot more familiar than you’d think.

Research shows that dogs have similar sleep patterns to humans, including REM sleep, which is when dreaming happens. Because of that, experts believe dogs tend to dream about their everyday lives. That could mean chasing a ball, running through the yard, or even spending time with you. Those little movements you see, like paw twitching or quiet woofs, may be your dog acting out those moments in their dreams.

Some dogs dream more often than others, too. Smaller dogs and puppies tend to have shorter, more frequent dreams, while larger dogs may have longer ones spaced further apart. And just like us, dogs can occasionally have bad dreams. In those moments, it’s usually best to let them sleep and offer comfort once they wake up.
