Every October, hundreds of costumed pups take over New York City’s East Village for what’s been dubbed the “Met Gala of the canine community.” The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, now in its 35th year, is as iconic as it is adorable. This year, it’s getting a fresh start thanks to the newly founded New York Dog Parade nonprofit, led by author and dog lover Fern Watt.

For Watt, who once attended the parade just for fun, stepping in to organize it was about keeping a joyful tradition alive. “It’s such a celebration of dog-human friendship,” she says. “Dogs are a global unifier.” With the help of community volunteers, this year’s event will feature costume contests, free treats, and four adoptable grand marshals from local rescues.

And for dog lovers everywhere, the magic doesn’t stop in Manhattan. This year, the parade will be livestreamed on YouTube, so anyone can join in the joy (and maybe take a few costume notes for next year).
