Chris MacRitchie didn’t expect to become a hero on a coffee run. But while waiting in a Dunkin’ drive-thru in Vermont, his son noticed a dog struggling in the icy Winooski River nearby. Chris, a father and a dog dad to two pups of his own, jumped into action.

Wearing just a T-shirt, sweatpants, and boots, Chris waded through snow and into the freezing water. A video filmed by his son shows him breaking through ice and carefully grabbing the dog, who was paddling toward a snowy drift. Chris pulled her to safety and carried her out of the river.

The dog, named Arizona, had gone missing the day before. When her owner, Morgan Cerasoli, got the call, she broke down in tears of relief and joy.

Chris said the choice was easy, stating, “I have two dogs myself, and I would hope someone would do that for them.”

When’s the last time you gave your dog’s bowl a real scrub? If you’re like most pet parents, it may be less often than vets recommend—and that could be risking your dog’s health more than you realize.

Even if the bowl looks clean, invisible bacteria can quickly grow, especially with leftover food and slobber hanging around. This buildup can form a slimy biofilm—basically a buffet for germs like Salmonella or E. coli. Vets say washing with hot, soapy water after every meal is ideal. Or, for a shortcut, toss a dishwasher-safe bowl into the top rack after each feeding.
