How to Keep Your Dog Safe From Outdoor Germs
Keeping your dog’s paws clean isn’t just about keeping your floors spotless. It’s actually one of the easiest ways to protect them from germs and parasites. According to veterinarians, dogs can pick up hookworms, roundworms, and bacteria just by walking through contaminated soil or stepping where another dog has gone to the bathroom.
A quick post-walk wipe-down can make all the difference. Use dog-safe wipes (not human baby wipes, which can contain irritants) to gently clean your pup’s paws after walks, especially if you frequent public parks or city sidewalks. It’s a small habit that can help prevent stomach issues, parasites, and skin irritation.
And while you’re at it, keep an eye on where your dog drinks. Skip communal water bowls and bring your own portable dish instead. Parasites like Giardia and bacteria like leptospirosis can lurk in shared water or puddles. Clean paws, safe water, and a quick check-in with your vet on vaccines and preventatives will go a long way toward keeping your dog healthy year-round.

Dog of the Day, Teddy
Teddy might not have a favorite TV show (yet), but this 2-year-old Shih Tzu-Bichon mix still knows how to steal the spotlight! Daily Dig reader Andrea sent in this photo of Teddy caught mid-turn with a look that says, “Were you going somewhere without me?”
He’s got the fluffy tail, the expressive eyes, and that perfect combo of sweet and curious. Whether he’s lounging by the door or waiting for his next adventure, Teddy brings a little joy to every moment.

How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog
Bathing your dog has benefits beyond them just smelling good. It’s also about keeping their skin healthy and coat clean without overdoing it. Veterinarians recommend aiming for every one to three months, depending on your dog’s breed, coat type, and lifestyle.
For example, short-haired dogs can go longer between baths, while long-haired or hairless breeds may need more frequent washing.
Bathing too often can actually cause problems by stripping natural oils from your dog’s coat, leading to dryness and irritation. Instead, use plain water rinses and regular brushing between baths to remove dirt and reduce dander. If your dog has skin folds or long fur, check those areas for trapped debris. These spots can cause irritation or infection if left uncleaned.
For bath day, stick with a dog-safe shampoo (human products can throw off their skin’s pH), avoid the eyes and ears, and dry your pup thoroughly afterward. For dogs who hate bath time, a lick mat with peanut butter can turn stress into treat time.
