How to Be the Best Dog Parent Ever

Being a dog parent is one of life’s sweetest roles. Our pups comfort us when we’re down, celebrate with us when we’re happy, and somehow always know just what we need. But being a great pet parent takes more than love. It’s about making thoughtful choices that keep them safe, healthy, and thriving.

Vets say some of the most important steps are routine ones: keeping vaccinations up to date, preventing fleas and ticks year-round, and feeding a balanced, high-quality diet. Weight management matters too, since even a few extra pounds can impact your dog’s joints and energy levels.

Daily care is just as vital. Regular grooming keeps coats and skin healthy while also giving you a chance to spot changes early. Mental stimulation, through training, walks in new places, or puzzle toys, helps prevent boredom and strengthens your bond.

And don’t forget the little things that make a big difference: dog-proofing your home, setting a steady routine, and making “no table scraps” a rule everyone follows. Vet-approved habits like these can turn everyday moments into long, happy years together.

Dog of the Day, Del

Meet Del, a resilient senior pup with a heart as big as her smile. This Chihuahua–Terrier mix was rescued during a thunderstorm. She was malnourished, tick-covered, and trembling with anxiety. But thanks to a whole lot of love and care, Del has made a remarkable recovery and now enjoys a life of comfort, cuddles, and adventure.

These days, Del is a proud Emotional Support Animal and a seasoned traveler. In this photo, she’s riding high on a Philly tour bus, soaking up the sights like a true local. When she’s not on the move, you can find her doing what she does best: napping, snacking, and being adored.

Thanks to Shelley for sharing Del’s incredible journey! Want to see your pup featured in Daily Dig? Send us a photo and a few fun facts. We’d love to include them!

Check out our top-rated pet insurance providers, with some plans offering coverage for just $1 a day, multi-pet coverage, and reimbursement options of up to 90%. With the right coverage, you could keep your pet (and your wallet) happy.

What Dogs Love on TV

Ever caught your dog glued to the screen and wondered if they’re really watching? According to new research, they might be, and their reactions say more about them than the show.

The study found that personality shapes TV habits. Excitable pups were more likely to paw at the screen or track moving objects. Anxious dogs reacted most to familiar noises like doorbells or car horns, while calm dogs tended to sit it out.

One thing stood out: dogs tuned in most when animals appeared. Whether it’s barking at a dog food commercial, wagging through a nature documentary, or tilting their head at a meowing cat, animal sounds and images grab their attention first.

Scientists point out that dogs don’t see TV like we do. They’re colorblind to red and green, and some footage may look flickery. But for many pups, the real draw is sharing the moment with their favorite human on the couch.
