…And more! ā¤ļø

True or False?

Dogs can fall in love.

Why National Mutt Day Is Worth Celebrating Year-Round

Even though National Mutt Day doesn’t roll around again until July 31, we think these one-of-a-kind pups deserve a little love year-round. With their unique looks, loyal hearts, and often hilarious backstories, mixed-breed dogs are everyday heroes of the canine world.

Mutts come from all kinds of backgrounds, which often makes them more adaptable—and, according to many vets, they may face fewer breed-specific health issues. That’s not only good for them, but also for the people who get to love them longer.

They’re also just fun to be around. Whether you’re training a mutt, dressing one up in a birthday hat, or simply watching them nap upside down with their tongue out, they tend to bring a kind of joy that’s hard to describe but easy to recognize.

So if you're lucky enough to share life with a mutt, consider this your cue to sneak them an extra treat. They’ve earned it.

The Benefits of DNA Testing Your Dog

Ever wondered what your dog’s DNA might say about them? Sure, it’s fun to guess which breeds are hiding behind those floppy ears or stubby tails, but genetic testing can offer more than just answers to curiosity.

A dog DNA test can reveal potential health risks, from breed-specific conditions to sensitivities to medications. One gene in particular, MDR1, can change how dogs react to common drugs—information that’s helpful to have before an emergency arises. It’s also possible to learn if your pup is a carrier of a condition they might never develop, but could pass on.

DNA testing can also help decode behavior. A pup with herding dog genes might not just ā€œlove chasingā€ā€”they’re wired for it. The more you understand your dog’s background, the easier it is to support their health and happiness.

And as a bonus, many companies use anonymous results to advance research for future generations of dogs. So that cheek swab? It’s not just about ancestry. It’s a glimpse into better care for your dog and countless others.

Dog of the Day, Sister

Daily Dig reader Margie shared the story of Sister, a Siberian Husky and German Shepherd mix with a whole lot of heart and even more personality.

Once a devoted alley mom caring for six tiny pups, Sister now runs the show at the dog park every morning at 5 a.m. She’s got a signature style: stalk, chase, be chased, repeat—and maybe sneak in a tail tug or two. She's hilariously expressive, full of goofy charm, and prefers chortles over barks when she’s got something to say.

Thanks for sharing your playful, sweet girl with us, Margie! Want your dog featured as the Daily Dig Dog of the Day? Send in a photo and a few fun facts—they might be next!
