When LA wildfires forced thousands to flee their homes, Dr. Annie Harvilicz took action. With her old pet hospital sitting unused, she transformed it into a temporary shelter for over 40 displaced dogs and cats. The veterinarian, who runs two animal hospitals and a rescue nonprofit, saw an opportunity to help families keep their pets safe during a time of crisis.

What started as a favor for her brother’s pets soon grew into a lifeline for the community. Using Facebook, Dr. Harvilicz offered her hospital as a refuge for families with multiple pets—often excluded from hotels and shelters. Volunteers stepped in to walk and care for the animals, who are thriving under the vet’s care. “They’re not just in kennels; they’re playing together and happy,” she shared.

The shelter doesn’t just provide a roof—it’s also a place for healing. Injured pets receive veterinary care, while families are provided with food and supplies for their furry friends.
