Is It Safe For Your Puppy to Go Outside?
Bringing home a new puppy comes with one big question: When can they finally explore the world outside? While full vaccine protection takes a few months, most vets say brief outdoor trips can start as early as 8 weeks if done with care.
That means carrying them to a clean, quiet patch of grass for potty breaks and letting them sniff around without meeting unfamiliar dogs. Early socialization helps build their confidence, but unvaccinated pups are still vulnerable to illness. It’s best to avoid areas with dog waste or lots of foot traffic.
Walks on a leash usually begin after 12 weeks, once all core vaccines are complete. Even then, puppies need time to get used to walking, so short sessions work best.
If your friends have healthy, vaccinated dogs, those early playdates can be great for social skills. Just check with your vet first, and keep things calm and positive

Dog of the Day, Marshmallow
Daily Dig reader Julie shared this irresistible baby pic of Marshmallow—a 10-week-old white pug with a smile that could melt anyone’s heart.
Don't let his tiny frame fool you—this little guy has the personality of a ten-gallon dog packed into one very adorable one-gallon bucket. Whether he's soaking up the sun or just flashing that signature grin, Marshmallow is already stealing the show (and probably a few treats, too).
Thanks for sharing your sweet pup with us, Julie! Want your dog featured as the Daily Dig Dog of the Day? Send in a photo and a few fun facts—they might be next!

Water Safety Tips for Summer Swims
A hot day and a splash in the water? Sounds perfect. But before your pup joins you poolside or lakeside, it’s worth brushing up on a few dog-specific safety tips.
Not all dogs are born swimmers, and even strong ones get tired fast. Ease them in slowly, watch for signs of fatigue like heavy panting or wobbly swimming, and consider a doggy life jacket—especially near rivers, boats, or the ocean. It’s also a good idea to teach them where and how to exit the water easily.
Ocean swims come with extra risks: rough waves, riptides, and even saltwater poisoning if your dog drinks too much. Always offer fresh water and rinse off beach gunk to prevent skin issues or illness.
Watch out for less obvious hazards too, like blue-green algae in lakes, water intoxication from too much gulping, or “swimmer’s tail” after overdoing it. A few smart precautions go a long way in making water days safe and fun.
