This Champion Surfer Has Four Paws
Thousands of spectators lined the beach in California to witness an unusual kind of athlete: surfing dogs. Among them was Cacau, a chocolate Labrador from Brazil who stole the show. With impressive balance and fearless moves, she rode her way to victory, claiming the title of "Top Dog" at this yearās World Dog Surfing Championships.
Competing against over 20 dogs, Cacau impressed judges with her technique, wave selection, and confidence. The event featured categories for different dog sizes, tandem surfing, and even human-dog duos. But Cacauās swift turns in rough waters set her apart. Her pet parent, Ivan Moreira, couldnāt have been prouder.
Beyond the competition, dog surfing is about connection. Many pet parents say it strengthens their bond, as pups learn to trust their humans in the water. Itās also a way to give backāthis yearās event raised funds for animal rescues.
Whether youāre a surfer or just a dog lover, thereās something special about watching these water-loving pups in action. Who knows? Maybe your own dog has what it takes to ride the waves next year!

Bo the Bloodhound: A Real-Life Hero
Bo, an 18-month-old bloodhound, isnāt just any police dogāheās the 2024 American Humane Hero Dog. The award honors dogs that go above and beyond, and Bo has certainly done that.
Since joining the Gastonia Police Department last year, he has helped locate missing children, elderly individuals, and even tracked down criminals. His biggest case? Finding a kidnapped 7-year-old in May and using his scent-tracking skills to bring the child home safely.
Boās gentle nature sets him apart. While other K-9s intimidate, Bo reassures. In one of his first rescues he not only found an 11-year-old child with autism but also calmed him down until officers arrived.
Heās also helped locate lost seniors, including a dementia patient who wandered from home. His ability to pick up even the faintest scent has led to multiple life-saving finds and earned him recognition nationwide.
That dedication is why Bo stood out among hundreds of nominees for the Hero Dog Award. The honor isnāt just about skillāitās about impact. Bo has changed lives, one search at a time. And while his job is serious, he does have one soft spot: Halloween decorations still give him the chills.
