How Good Nutrition Can Help Your Dog Live Longer

Every dog parent wants more time with their best friend. The good news? Your dog’s diet can play a major role in how long and how well they live. Just like us, dogs thrive on real, balanced nutrition. That means a food with plenty of protein, healthy fats, and the right nutrients for their age and activity level. If you’re unsure where to start, your vet can help you find a diet that fits your dog and your budget.

Keeping your pup at a healthy weight is one of the easiest ways to help them live longer. More than half of dogs in North America are overweight, and that extra padding can lead to health problems like arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease. Pair the right portion sizes with daily walks and some mental stimulation (think puzzle feeders or short training sessions) to keep both body and mind in shape.

And while brushing your dog’s teeth or adding a supplement might not seem like much, small habits go a long way. Regular dental care keeps infections at bay, and supplements like fish oil or probiotics can support joints, skin, and digestion. Helping your dog live longer isn’t about big changes. It’s about everyday care that adds up over time.

The Solution to Your Dog’s Food Strike

If your dog’s mealtimes have turned into a waiting game (sniffing, walking away, or refusing to eat), it’s often a sign their food isn’t working. Whether your dog has allergies, a sensitive stomach, or just wants something new, Jinx makes recipes they’ll love and you’ll feel good about serving.

Developed by veterinarians and pet nutritionists, Jinx recipes combine premium proteins like Atlantic salmon, cage-free chicken, grass-fed beef, and grass-fed lamb with nutrient-dense superfoods and patented probiotics.

With their selection of kibble, gently cooked meals, & toppers, and Kibble Sauce, Jinx’s food requires zero preparation and is easy to serve. And now, you can find Jinx at PetSmart, both in-store and online.

Dog of the Day, Silas

This is Silas, a Boston terrier with a big personality and an even bigger sense of humor. He turns two this December and already has a reputation for stealing the show.

Silas loves being around people and thrives in a crowd. He's always ready to be the center of attention (with those eyes, how could he not be?).

Thank you to Daily Dig reader, David, for sharing Silas with us. Want your pup featured as Dog of the Day? Send us a photo, their name, and a little bit about them. We’d love to share it!

Breed Spotlight: Beagle

If you’ve ever been greeted by a Beagle’s big brown eyes and wagging tail, it’s easy to see why they’re among the most popular family dogs. They’re friendly, gentle, and always up for a walk (or a cuddle). Bred to live and work in packs, Beagles are natural social butterflies, thriving in homes with kids, other dogs, or anyone who enjoys constant company. Their small size makes them adaptable to both apartments and backyards, and with minimal grooming needs, they’re about as low-maintenance as it gets.

But Beagles aren’t without quirks. Their signature howl can fill an entire neighborhood, and their strong sense of smell can lead them on unexpected adventures (or into a freshly dug hole in your garden). They can also be a little stubborn, especially when training competes with a good scent trail. Patience and consistency are key.

For most dog parents, the trade-offs are worth it. With plenty of love, attention, and a sense of humor, a Beagle can be the perfect match. Equal parts loyal companion, playful explorer, and affectionate family member.
