Why does my dog…

Why does my dog scratch the floor before lying down?

Is Your Dog’s Wolf Side Showing?

That nap-loving pup on your couch? Genetically, they’re still 99.9% wolf. While your dog may not howl at the moon or roam for miles, their behavior is shaped by instincts honed over thousands of years.

Researchers have found that traits like prey drive, energy level, and even trainability often align with a breed’s historical role. Herding dogs tend to be highly responsive to commands. Terriers, originally bred to hunt vermin, may be more stubborn and quick to chase. And just like their ancestors, many dogs prefer high-protein meals that mimic the meat-heavy diets of wild canines.

Even with training, some behaviors stick because they’re rewarding. A dog that loves roaming might keep looking for chances to explore, even if they know the rules.

So while your dog may live for belly rubs and biscuits, they’re still wired to follow their nose and their taste buds. Understanding their roots can help you work with their instincts, from how they play to what ends up in their bowl.

Design a Diet For the Wolf in Your Dog

Ever wondered why your dog devours meat but ignores kibble? They might be trying to tell you something.

Canines have been thriving on raw, meat-based diets for millennia. Your dogs’ anatomy is not much different than their ancestors. Their short digestive tracts are ideal for processing raw protein, and they have no salivary amylase (used to break down starch). So, like ancient canines, a raw meaty diet is the easiest thing to digest.

We Feed Raw creates meal plans based on your dog’s biology to provide better energy, improve well-being, and lower the risk of illness-related disease.

Dog of the Day, Bowie

Daily Dig reader Caroline shared this dazzling photo of her 4-year-old Boston Terrier, Bowie, rocking one blue eye, one brown, and a whole lot of personality.

Named after the legendary David Bowie, this pup is equal parts rockstar and snugglebug. When he’s not supervising the neighborhood from the top of the couch, you’ll find him splooted out in the grass, soaking in the moment. Bonus: he’s an ice cream connoisseur (his favorite treat is a doggie sundae, naturally).

Thanks for sharing your sofa-perching prince with us, Caroline! Want your pup featured as the Daily Dig Dog of the Day? Send in a photo and a few fun facts—they might be next!

Surprising New Study on Dog Feeding Habits

Most of us feed our dogs twice a day: once in the morning, once at night. But a new study looking at over 10,000 dogs suggests once-a-day feeding might be linked to better health in some areas.

Dogs fed once daily were less likely to show signs of cognitive decline and had lower odds of developing gastrointestinal, orthopedic, and kidney issues. That said, the study didn’t find differences in skin or heart conditions, and it didn’t track calorie amounts, just feeding frequency.

It’s important to note that this was observational data, and researchers aren’t suggesting everyone switch routines. Puppies, seniors, and dogs with certain health conditions still benefit from more frequent meals.

So, should you change your dog’s feeding schedule? Probably not without talking to your vet first. But it’s an interesting reminder that routines can evolve as we learn more, and that your dog’s health is partly shaped by what’s in the bowl.
