Adoption days are always special, but one puppy’s retelling of his own story made millions of people fall in love with him. Gilligan, a yellow lab pup, went viral after a TikTok gave viewers his point of view on being brought home for the first time.

In the video, Gilligan describes his adoption, recounting every detail with wide-eyed honesty. From the naps he squeezed in beforehand to the moment he met his new “mother” and red-haired “sister.” His playful storytelling makes him feel like the narrator of his own family adventure.

The clip resonated far beyond laughs. More than 30 million viewers have tuned in, many touched by the way it captures what adoption might look like through a puppy’s eyes. Gilligan’s story shows how one wagging tail and a little imagination can spark joy across the world.

The Labrador retriever has been one of America’s favorite dogs for more than three decades, but many people are still confused about whether there are different “types.” While you may hear about “English” or “American” Labs, experts say there’s technically only one breed.

The differences people notice are more about style than genetics. American Labs are usually taller, slimmer, and bred with field work in mind. Think energetic dogs that can sprint across a field or dive into water all day. English Labs, often seen in show rings, tend to have broader heads, stockier builds, and calmer dispositions, making them easygoing companions.

No matter the style, all Labradors share the same official breed standard: black, yellow, or chocolate coats; webbed feet; strong otter-like tails; and that famously friendly temperament.
