Meet the Dogs Saving Australia’s Animals

In Victoria, Australia, a team of detection dogs is contributing to wildlife conservation. Moss, a yellow Labrador, and Kip, a Kelpie mix, are trained to sniff out platypus burrows (an almost impossible task for humans). The elusive, nocturnal creatures spend most of their lives underwater or underground, leaving researchers struggling to track their habitats.

Outfitted in safety vests and balanced on paddleboards, the dogs guide scientists through the creeks of Healesville Sanctuary. By pinpointing burrow entrances from above the water, the dogs help researchers study and protect one of Australia’s most unique and endangered mammals without disturbing them. It’s careful work, with a lot of tail wagging in between.

The project is part of a growing movement using canine scent detection for conservation. For Moss and Kip, it’s not just a job. It’s a game! Every successful find earns a ball or a treat, turning science into play while helping secure the future of endangered species.

Dog of the Day, Bella

Say hello to Bella, an adorable 3-year-old Cavachon. Whether she’s lounging by the window or sprinting across the room after her favorite toy, Bella brings non-stop spunk and charm to every moment.

Her true passion? Playing fetch. And when she’s not playing fetch, she’s serving cozy autumn vibes (pumpkin prop and all).

Thank you to Daily Dig reader, Lisa, for sharing Bella with us! Want your pup featured as Dog of the Day? Send us a photo, their name, and a little bit about them. We’d love to feature them!

Cats (and Humans) Love This New Litter

Most traditional cat litters are made from strip-mined clay or silica. Both end up in landfills when thrown away and are not biodegradable.

A new natural cat litter called Tailfeather is changing this with their eco-friendly, plant-based, clumping cat litter made from coconut and cassava.

Why coconut? The husk of the coconut absorbs liquid up to 9 times its weight! This makes for a soft, luxurious litter that cats love and is 70% lighter than traditional litter, but also doesn't track and bounce out of the box.

It's fully biodegradable and 100% plastic-free, including the packaging. Tailfeather is delivered conveniently to your door, and each package lasts for 8 weeks, double the amount of other litters.

For the next 24 hours, Daily Dig readers get a $15 credit on your first order with code Dig15.

Breed Spotlight: The Maltese

The Maltese may look like they belong in a palace, and historically, they did. But behind that silky white coat is a playful, affectionate companion who loves nothing more than being close to their person. Originally from Malta, these tiny dogs (weighing just 4 to 8 pounds) were once favorites of royalty, from Queen Elizabeth I to Mary Queen of Scots. Today, they’re adored for their gentle nature, intelligence, and eagerness to please.

Their low-shedding coat makes them a popular pick for allergy sufferers, but it requires regular brushing to stay smooth and mat-free. While Maltese dogs don’t need hours of exercise, they thrive on short walks, play sessions, and lots of attention. Left alone too long, they can develop separation anxiety, so they do best in homes where someone’s often around.

They’re also known for being picky eaters with big personalities. Training can take patience, but their loyalty and charm make every effort worthwhile. With proper grooming, care, and regular vet checkups, Maltese dogs often live 12–14 years. Long enough to rule your heart like the little royals they are!
