High School Robotics Team Helps Dog Missing Limbs
Roo (also known as Kanga-Roo) was born without front legs, but she was lucky enough to find some smart kids to lend her a helping paw (or two). The Steel Eagles Robotics Team from Holy Savior Menard School worked on a custom design for a wheelchair for Roo.
They worked hard to perfect the fit for her. It took Roo some time to get used to it, but she’s now cruising around with her 3D-printed wheelchair. Congrats to the team on their amazing creation!
Dogs Can Live Their Best Lives Even When Missing a Limb
In the animal kingdom, losing a limb isn’t quite as big of a tragedy as it is for humans. Veterinarians see many dogs who need limb amputation, and they can live long and healthy lives following the procedure as long as they have good care. After the initial surgery, very little follow-up medical care is likely required once they heal. If you are considering adopting a three-legged dog, there are a few ways to help them remain comfortable and healthy.
Protect them from danger. Keep an eye on your pup. Keep them on a leash because they will likely feel a bit more vulnerable initially.
Watch for weight gain. There might be an initial rest period after surgery, and without their usual exercise, you want to ensure they don’t gain any unnecessary weight. Keep them on a healthy diet.
Make changes around the house to simplify their daily routine. Install ramps to help them get to their favorite spots. Elevate their food bowls. Add rugs to slippery floorings.
Maintain a good relationship with your veterinarian. Make all the appropriate follow-up appointments and continue with wellness checks to keep your dog healthy.
DOTD - Meet Vinnie
Our featured dog of the day today is Vinnie. He is 11 years old and lost his eye to cancer about a year ago, but that hasn’t stopped him. The backyard is his hangout spot, and he keeps an eye on the family while they're swimming in the pool.
He circles the pool to check on everyone and cool off from that Texas heat. Vinnie’s family is lucky to have such a lovely lifeguard. Thanks for sharing, Jackie!
