How to Name Your Dog & Most Popular Names of 2024
Choosing your dogâs name is something incredibly specialâand fun. Unlike baby names, you can get a bit silly with dog names, and they still sound adorable while matching your pupâs personality perfectly. Itâs funny how we just seem to know the right name within minutes or hours of meeting them!
But what if youâre stuck? What should you keep in mind when picking a name? After all, this will be the name youâll be calling when your dogâs up to no goodâlike stealing socks, jumping on the table, or chewing the couch. And of course, itâs the same name youâll use when showering them with love and affection. Here are some fun tips to inspire you when naming your dog.
Let Your Creativity Run Wild. When naming your pup, donât be afraid to think outside the box! Consider their breed, appearance, and personality. Pet parents are getting creative, turning nicknames into official names. One of our Daily Dig readers we featured not too long ago had pups named Bella May Beautiful and Maggie Moo!
Get Input from the Whole Family. Itâs always fun to involve other family members in the naming process â especially kids! They have the best imaginations, leading to the most creative ideas. When I was little, I remember driving to pick up our new puppy while brainstorming names. Iâd just seen a red scooter in my schoolbook that day, and I thought "Scooter" was the perfect fit â and so did my parents. Scooter became a part of our family for 14 wonderful years!
Think About Nature. Nature-inspired names are always popular, especially for pet parents looking for something meaningful that represents the power and beauty of Earth. These names can range from celestial bodies to plants, animals, and even ocean creatures. It's also fun to explore the meanings behind them! Think Luna, Bear, Willow, Rocky, Juniper, Daisy, Sky, and so many more.
Food-Inspired Names. Food-inspired names are another popular trend â theyâre fun, and we donât often get to name kids after food. These kinds of names are always adorable and bring a smile to everyoneâs face. Personally, I know dogs named Crouton, Radish, and Rhubarb, and theyâre just so stinking cute. Oh, and I canât forget my very own Mango!

Shelter Dog Is Finally Noticed After Reaching Out His Paw
For seven lonely months, Lancer stayed at City of Mobile Animal Services, without anyone asking to meet him. The staff who knew him knew that he was the sweetest dog who just wanted somebody to notice him. And he decided he would do everything he could to be noticed.
âWhenever someone would walk past his kennel, he would stick out his paw in an attempt for someone to hold it,â Mary Kate Hale, digital media manager for City of Mobile Animal Services, told The Dodo
Lancer would press himself against the front of his kennel, squeezing his paw through the bars in hopes that someone would hold his paw. Once they held him, theyâd have to fall in love with him, right?
âLancer is known for his sweet nature and love of peanut butter,â Hale shared. âAfter a round of zoomies, he can be found napping in a shaded spot with his legs sprawled out like a frog's.â
One day, Lancer stuck out his paw to a passing volunteer, who couldnât resist snapping a photo of his adorable plea for affection. After that â and it didnât take long for Lancer to steal everyoneâs hearts. He was finally noticed in all the ways he ever wanted.
âWithin 24 hours of being posted on Facebook, Lancer caught the attention of his future dad, Nick,â Hale said. Nick immediately saw how sweet Lancer was and wanted to bring him home.
Now, Lancer is surrounded by all the love he could ever hope for, with his new dad always there to give it.

DOTD - Meet Rudy
Meet Rudy! This is Rudy hard at work on kitten duty. We love his brown eyebrows! His mom says he's got several important jobs around the house:
Kitten Trainer: Rudy shows the many foster kittens that dogs can be great friends.
Dishwasher Assistant: He takes care of the pre-cleaning before the dishes go into the dishwasher.
Recycler: Rudy helps by cleaning out the cat food cans before they go into the recycling bin.
Neighborhood Cleanup: â On his daily walks, he tries to clean up all the cat poop left by stray or loose cats.
Thanks for sharing!
