It turns out most dog parents aren’t shy about admitting what feels obvious: their dog is their best friend. In a new national survey, 46 percent of dog parents chose “best friend” to describe their pup, almost twice the rate of cat parents. And while cats scored lower, both groups overwhelmingly agreed on one thing: pets are part of the family.

The survey also highlighted how much emotional support pets provide. Ninety-five percent of dog parents said their dogs give unconditional love, and 89 percent said their pet helps their mental health. Many even feel deeply known by their dogs: 77 percent think their pup understands them well, and nearly a quarter believe their dog knows them better than anyone else.

Titles aside, the bond is the same: dogs make people feel understood, supported, and loved in a way that’s hard to put into words. For most pet parents, “best friend” doesn’t even begin to cover it.
