Celebrating National Pit Bull Awareness Day

National Pit Bull Awareness Day (NPBAD) is a special day dedicated to shining a positive light on one of the most misunderstood dog breeds: the pit bull. Sadly, weā€™re all aware of the unfair prejudice and misinformation surrounding pitties, leading too many people to miss out on the joy of having these loyal, loving, and goofy pups in their lives.

So today, letā€™s celebrate some of the awesome qualities that make pitties so special.

Endless Affection. Pit bulls are some of the most affectionate dogs you'll ever meet. They thrive on human contact and love being as close as possible to their people. My 90-pound pittie thinks he's a tiny lap dog and wants everyone to be his best friend. True story: a contractor once told me how intimidating our pittie looked, but after meeting him, he said he was one of the most lovable dogs heā€™d ever met.

Beautiful Features. Those pittie ā€œblock headsā€ are adorable, especially when their ears go back in excitement, making them look like cute, bald seals. And despite the fear tactic, thereā€™s nothing unique about their jawsā€”no breed can "lock" their jaws. But pit bulls do have wide mouths that give them those heart-melting smiles!

Nanny Dogs. While the idea of pit bulls being true "nanny dogs" is a myth, their reputation as loving and protective companions to children is well-earned. Theyā€™ve been cherished as family dogs for generations. My own pittie is the gentlest of all my pups with my 3-year-oldā€”he even lets him ā€œrideā€ him like a pony!

Heroes of History. Pit bulls have even been heroes, like Sergeant Stubby, one of the most celebrated dogs in U.S. military history. During World War I, Stubbyā€™s bravery and loyalty saved soldiers and earned a Purple Heart and a promotion to sergeant.

What do you love most about pit bulls? Donā€™t forget to spread some positivity about them today on National Pit Bull Awareness Day!

5 Tips for Choosing the Best Pet Insurance

As dog parents, itā€™s not always fun and gamesā€”although most of the time, it is! There are a few not-so-glamorous responsibilities like giving preventative meds, ordering endless poop bags, and refilling the water bowl (constantly). One task that might not be at the top of your list is choosing pet insurance, but itā€™s one of the most important. But with so many options, how do you choose the right one? Here are 5 tips to help you decide.

  1. Think About Your Pupā€™s Specific Needs

All dogs have different health risks. Puppies and older dogs often require more comprehensive coverage, and certain breeds may be prone to conditions like hip dysplasia or respiratory issues. Look for a plan tailored to your dogā€™s age, breed, and lifestyle.

  1. Check Whatā€™s Covered

Not all policies are created equal. While some cover accidents and illnesses, others include basic wellness care. Make sure the plan covers what matters most to youā€”whether itā€™s dental care, prescription meds, or hereditary conditions.

  1. Balance Premiums and Deductibles

Higher premiums usually mean lower out-of-pocket costs during an emergency, while lower premiums might result in bigger bills when the unexpected happens. Find a balance that fits your budget and risk tolerance.

  1. Read Customer Reviews

Iā€™m a sucker for picking things based on reviews, and pet insurance is no different. Real-life experiences can give you valuable insight into what to expect. Reviews can highlight aspects of the service, like the claims process or customer support, that are important to you. See what other dog parents have to say.

  1. Ask About Discounts

Many companies offer discounts for multiple pets, microchipping, or even for having no claims over a certain period. No matter your budget, itā€™s always worth asking about ways to save.

We hope these tips help you find the perfect insurance plan for your pup and give you peace of mind for all your future adventures together!
