What Your Dog Hopes You Add to Their Routine This Year

As the new year rolls around, new toys and treats are absolutely part of the fun, and dogs definitely notice when something fresh shows up. A new chew, a favorite training treat, or a puzzle toy can add excitement and mental stimulation to their day. But what dogs tend to value just as much is how those things fit into their routine and environment.

Dogs thrive when toys are rotated so they don’t get bored, treats are used thoughtfully for training or enrichment, and playtime feels engaging instead of chaotic. Many dogs also appreciate upgrades like a cozier bed in a quiet spot, slow feeders that turn meals into a game, or longer sniff breaks on walks. Those small choices help dogs feel relaxed and confident.

Heading into the new year, the best gifts are a mix of fun and function. New toys and treats bring joy, but consistency, enrichment, and time spent together are what make those gifts really land.

Dog of the Day, Pepper

Meet Pepper, a 4-year-old Shar Pei who joined her family in November 2024 and quickly made herself right at home. Pepper loves chasing balls and toys, going on long walks, and investigating everything around her with curious determination.

When playtime is over, she’s just as happy being a loving, loyal presence with her people. Her family says they’re incredibly lucky to have her, and it’s easy to see why.

Thank you to Daily Dig reader Tom for sharing Pepper with us! Want to see your dog featured as a Daily Dig Dog of the Day? Send a photo and a short note about your pup, and they might be up next.

How to Beat Cabin Fever With Your Dog

When it’s freezing out and walks get cut short, dogs don’t suddenly stop needing stimulation. Many just trade zoomies for dramatic sighs, pacing, or finding “creative” ways to entertain themselves. Winter can be tough on dogs who are used to daily adventures, but staying inside doesn’t have to mean a restless pup or a guilty dog parent.

Indoor play goes a long way. A few short rounds of tug, fetch down the hallway, or hide-and-seek with treats can burn more energy than expected. Training sessions help too. Practicing sit, stay, or learning a new trick gives dogs mental work, structure, and some well-earned praise.

Food puzzles, stuffed toys, and frozen treats can keep dogs busy while giving their brains a workout. Rotating toys or pulling out one that’s been tucked away can feel brand-new. On cold days, attention, routine, and mental challenges often matter more than steps, and a tired brain can be just as satisfying as a long walk.
