Mom and Pup Found Curled Up Together
A stray mother dog and her puppy are safe after being found curled up together on the streets. The Detroit Dog Rescue shared their story on September 4th with a photo that shows exactly how they were discovered.
In the touching photo, the two pups appear to be pitty mixes and look thin, but thankfully, they’re now getting the care they need. The rescue noted, “Mom did her best to protect them both, and now it’s our job to help them.” Both dogs need significant medical attention, with the puppy battling ringworm and other issues.
While their story warms our hearts, it also sheds light on the struggles many strays face. The Detroit Dog Rescue, Detroit’s first no-kill, non-profit shelter, is dedicated to giving them a second chance, ensuring no healthy pup is euthanized. These two are some of the lucky ones.
The rescue is also reaching out to the community for help naming these two! Some adorable suggestions have already come in, like Sweet Potato and Bonnie and Clyde. If you have an idea, be sure to let the Detroit Dog Rescue know!
Take Your Pup on an Orchard Adventure
It’s apple season! If you’re planning a trip to the orchard this fall, why not bring your pup along—there are plenty of orchards that welcome dogs! First things first: You’ll need to do a little research to find a dog-friendly spot. Many of these orchards require that your pups are well-behaved (which rules out two of my four doggos) and may have other restrictions. Before you grab your leash and head out to pick some delicious apples, here are some tips to keep in mind.
Keep Your Dog Leashed. Apple orchards are busy places with people, kids, and maybe even farm animals. Keeping your pup leashed prevents them from wandering off and helps other guests feel comfortable. Since apple seeds are toxic to dogs, it's important to keep them close and make sure they're not sneaking fallen or rotten apples from the ground.
Clean Up After Your Pup. Bring plenty of poop bags and be ready to clean up after your dog. No one wants a mess, especially in a place people associate with fresh apples and crisp fall air. Along with poop bags, pack a collapsible water dish and some treats to keep your pup happy and hydrated throughout the day.
Only Bring Trained Dogs. If your pup isn’t great at following commands or gets too excited in public, it’s probably best to leave them at home. Don’t worry though—if your pup has to stay behind, you can always bring them back some tasty apples!
Respect Personal Space. Not everyone at the orchard is a dog person (hard to believe, right?). Some visitors might be afraid of dogs due to a past bad experience, or they may be protective of their kids who haven’t warmed up to pups yet. Whatever the reason, always keep your dog close and make sure they don’t forget their manners and jump on others.
Here are some dog-friendly orchards across the U.S. to help get you started:
Deardorff Orchards & Vineyard, MN
Barton Orchards, NY
B.J. Reece Orchards, GA
Nashoba Valley Winery and Orchard, MA
Justus Orchard, NC
Applecrest Farm Orchards, NH
