True or False?

Dogs know when you’re about to end playtime.

What Dogs Love That We Often Miss

Dogs don’t need nonstop stimulation to be happy. They need consistency, connection, and a sense of safety. Research and behavior experts agree that familiar routines, gentle affection, and predictable daily patterns help dogs regulate stress and feel secure. That’s why things like your scent on a sweatshirt, a familiar sleeping spot, or a calm check-in after work can mean more to a dog than a pile of new toys.

Walks are another big one, and not just for exercise. Dogs experience the world through scent, so letting them sniff, explore new routes, and take their time helps meet important mental needs. Puzzle toys, training games, and short play sessions also provide cognitive stimulation, which reduces boredom-related behaviors like chewing or restlessness.

Dogs are also highly tuned in to human emotions. Studies show they respond to our tone, body language, and stress levels, which means calm routines and clear expectations help dogs stay balanced. A steady schedule, positive reinforcement, and moments of quiet connection all teach dogs that their world is predictable. And for them, that’s the foundation of happiness.

Dog of the Day Duo

Meet today’s very festive dogs of the day: Holly Blossom and Bonnie Blue. This adorable duo hails from North Texas and proudly earned a spot on Santa’s Nice List this past year. Holly Blossom is about to hit a big milestone (double digits this year), while Bonnie Blue will be turning 7 in January.

Why Dogs Get Extra Sleepy in Winter

If your dog suddenly needs three naps before noon once winter hits, you’re not imagining things. Dogs, like humans, are affected by shorter days and colder temperatures, which can naturally make them feel sleepier. Reduced daylight increases melatonin levels, the hormone linked to sleep, while lower activity levels can also shift their daily rhythm.

Cold weather also asks more of a dog’s body. Staying warm takes energy, especially for small breeds, short-haired dogs, puppies, and seniors. Older dogs may nap more because joint stiffness or arthritis flares up in colder months, making movement less appealing. On the flip side, cold-weather breeds like Huskies or Malamutes may actually feel more energized once temperatures drop.

Some seasonal sluggishness is normal, but sudden or extreme changes aren’t. If your dog skips meals, refuses walks entirely, or seems unusually withdrawn, it’s worth checking in with a vet. Otherwise, a little extra sleep paired with cozy bedding, gentle indoor play, and shorter outdoor outings is just your dog’s way of riding out winter.
