This Shelter Dog’s Love Language is Hugs

At The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas, a 5-year-old pit bull mix named Zar has become known for one thing above all else: hugging. Not tail wags. Not zoomies. Full-on, lean-into-you, melt-your-heart hugs.

From the moment Zar arrived at the shelter, staff noticed she connected with people in a way they hadn’t seen before. She presses her whole body into anyone willing to stop for a moment, resting her chin in their hands and staying there as long as she’s allowed. Shelter staff jokingly call her “The Hugging Shelter Dog,” but the affection is very real.

Zar enjoys playtime, treats, and walks like any other dog, but her favorite moments are quiet ones spent close to people she trusts. Her hugs have become part of the daily routine for staff and volunteers, and are a small comfort during busy shelter days.

What’s hard to understand is that despite all that love, Zar has been repeatedly passed over by adopters. Staff continue sharing her story, hoping the right person sees what they see every day.

Until then, Zar keeps hugging. And hoping one of those hugs finally leads her home.

Dog of the Day, Bella

Meet Bella, the forever rescue of Daily Dig reader Toni. Bella was rescued at 3 years old after being used for breeding. She’s now 6 years old and living the life she always deserved. Toni writes that she and Bella truly rescued each other, forming a bond that never wavers.

Bella never leaves Toni’s side and greets everyone she meets with love. She’s a fan of snowy playtime, belly rubs, treats, and, most of all, attention. Beautiful inside and out, Bella is a perfect reminder that second chances can turn into the very best chapters.

Thank you to Toni for sharing Bella’s story with us! Want to see your dog featured next? Send in their name, photo, and a few fun facts for their chance to be our next dog of the day.

Teach Your Dog to Wear Winter Boots

Dog boots are one of those things that make total sense to humans, and absolutely none to dogs. Cold sidewalks, snow, and ice melt can be rough on paw pads, but that doesn’t stop many pups from acting like boots are a personal betrayal.

The key is easing into it. Instead of strapping boots on and hoping for the best, start by letting your dog investigate them. Set the boots on the floor, reward any sniffing or curiosity, and build a positive association before a boot ever touches a paw.

Once your dog seems relaxed around the boots, introduce them slowly. Tap a boot gently against one paw, reward calm behavior, then practice slipping a paw in and out without fastening anything. Working with one boot at a time keeps things manageable and prevents overwhelm.

As your dog gets more comfortable, gradually increase how long the boot stays on, tightening straps only after they’re relaxed. Practice indoors first, then try short outdoor walks with plenty of praise and treats.

For dogs who truly hate boots, paw wax can help protect pads from salt and cold. No matter the method, patience pays off. Healthy paws make winter walks better for everyone.
