The film made the breed a household name, but long before Hollywood, St. Bernards were known as gentle giants with a heart as big as their frame.

Standing up to 30 inches tall and tipping the scale at 140 to 180 pounds, these dogs were originally bred to rescue travelers in the Swiss Alps.
