The Breed That Inspired Beethoven

When Beethoven hit theaters in 1992, it wasn’t just the silly antics that stuck with families. It was the enormous, lovable St. Bernard at the center of the story. The film made the breed a household name, but long before Hollywood, St. Bernards were known as gentle giants with a heart as big as their frame.

Standing up to 30 inches tall and tipping the scale at 140 to 180 pounds, these dogs were originally bred to rescue travelers in the Swiss Alps. Despite their size, they’re famously patient, loyal, and wonderful with children. These traits helped them become beloved family pets and the perfect choice for a movie star.

On set, more than one canine played Beethoven, including the main dog named Chris. To capture those unforgettable slobber shots, the crew even used egg whites mixed with food coloring.

Whether in the snowy Alps or on a Hollywood soundstage, St. Bernards have always been about the same thing: offering comfort, companionship, and a whole lot of love.

Dog of the Day, Chloe

Say hello to Chloe, Laura’s adorable little foodie with a flair for the finer things. While she’ll never say no to a good chew on her bone, her true mealtime favorite? A turkey and blueberry dinner that gets her tail wagging every time.

Whether she’s waiting patiently at dinnertime or supervising the house with quiet confidence, Chloe brings joy to every part of the day.

Thanks to Laura for kicking off our Tuesday with Chloe’s charm! Want your dog featured in the Daily Dig? Send us a photo, their name, and a few fun facts. We’d love to share their story!

A Vet’s Guide to Dogs and Peanut Butter

Peanut butter may be your dog’s favorite treat, but veterinarians say it’s best served in moderation. While it’s not toxic on its own, peanut butter is calorie-dense, which can lead to weight gain if your pup gets too much.

A single tablespoon can have around 200 calories, nearly a full day’s worth for small dogs. Experts recommend treats make up no more than 10 percent of your dog’s daily diet. For bigger dogs, a thin smear on a toy or wrapped around a pill is more than enough.

There’s one big exception: never feed your dog peanut butter that contains xylitol, a common sugar substitute. Even small amounts can be life-threatening, causing low blood sugar and liver failure.

Dogs love peanut butter’s salty-sweet flavor and sticky texture, but alternatives like plain pumpkin or applesauce can make healthy swaps. A little goes a long way in keeping treat time both fun and safe.
