Why Your Dog Might Love Holiday Lights

You’re not imagining it, dogs really do seem to enjoy holiday light displays. From huskies gazing at glowing trees to pit bulls hanging their heads out car windows, dogs are soaking in the sparkle of the season. Some even sit and watch the lights night after night, like it’s their own private show.

Behaviorists say the reaction depends on the dog. Curious, confident dogs often find twinkling lights and moving decorations exciting, while more cautious dogs might find them a little unnerving. If your dog licks their lips, flattens their ears, or hides, it’s a sign to give the bright displays a break.

But for many dogs, the magic isn’t really in the lights. It’s in the moment spent with you. Whether they’re sniffing a glowing reindeer or curling up beside you on the drive home, it’s the time together that shines brightest.

Dog of the Day, Gabby

Meet Gabby, a 13½-year-old Goldendoodle who recently turned heads dressed as a lion for Dog Days at the Gardens. Friendly and playful, Gabby’s always ready to charm a crowd.

She’s a seasoned adventurer, too. From wineries and gardens to beach strolls and neighborhood hikes, Gabby goes wherever dogs are welcome.

How to Dog-Proof Your Holiday Decorations

The holidays bring twinkling lights, ornaments, and plenty of excitement, but for dogs, they can also bring temptation. Tinsel, ribbons, and ornaments that look like toys can all pose risks if chewed or swallowed. Skip tinsel altogether, use shatterproof ornaments, and keep edible decorations like popcorn garlands out of reach.

When choosing holiday plants, avoid poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly, which can make dogs sick. Opt for safer choices like Christmas cactus or artificial greenery. And if your dog’s tail doubles as a wrecking ball, secure the tree so it can’t tip over during a playful moment.

Instead of candles, try LED versions for a cozy glow without the fire hazard. And don’t forget your dog’s comfort. Set up a quiet space with their bed and toys away from the holiday bustle. With a few small changes, your home can stay festive, beautiful, and totally safe for your favorite four-legged family member.
