Dancing With the Stars pro Alan Bersten didn’t hit the road solo this season—his pup Jeff, a Brussels griffon, came along for the ride. Touring across time zones might sound chaotic, but Jeff quickly adapted to the rhythm of life on a bus. According to Alan, Jeff even managed to skip the bathroom mishaps (aside from one shoe incident).

Traveling with a dog means thinking ahead. Hotel elevators and late-night potty breaks can be tricky, but a bus setup offered more flexibility. Before Superman had Lois Lane, he had Krypto. The red-caped white dog first appeared in 1955’s Adventure Comics #210 and quickly became a fan favorite: a loyal companion with super speed, flight, and a heart as big as his owner’s. But as comic adaptations leaned darker over the decades, Krypto was often left out of the story.

Now, director James Gunn has brought him back in the latest Superman film, inspired by his own rescue dog, Ozu, who helped shape Krypto’s personality. Gunn describes Ozu as “problematic to say the least”. The once-fearful pup who eventually became “a very good boy.” That journey, he says, mirrors Krypto’s imperfect but deeply lovable nature.

Over the years, Krypto has taken many forms, such as a Lab, husky, or shepherd, but his real breed doesn’t matter. As Gunn puts it, Krypto’s from Krypton, after all. What’s stayed the same is what every dog owner knows: even superheroes need someone waiting at home, tail wagging.
