Adorable Dogs Help Tennis Stars Stay Grounded
Tennis can be a lonely sport, but for several US Open competitors, comfort comes in their four-legged best friends. Players like Bianca Andreescu, Danielle Collins, and Naomi Osaka say their dogs (Coco, Quincy, and Butta) help them manage stress, stay positive, and keep perspective no matter the score.
Andreescuās toy poodle, Coco, even has her own tournament credential and has become a regular at matches, offering instant calm after tough losses. Collins calls her rescue pup, Quincy, her āmagical healer,ā saying his affection helps her recharge and even connect with new people on the road. And Osakaās French bulldog, Butta, has become her go-to source of comfort, āa big baby,ā she says, who loves to cuddle away the pressure.
Win or lose, these athletes agree: nothing steadies the nerves quite like a wagging tail and a familiar face waiting courtside.

Do Dogs Have Taste Buds Like Humans Do?
Dogs might not savor flavors quite like humans, but they definitely have taste buds. About 1,700 compared to our 9,000. Those taste buds help them identify sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and even water-based flavors, though their preferences lean toward meats and fats thanks to their carnivorous roots. Puppies develop this sense within weeks of birth, but it fades slightly with age as taste and smell decline.
Interestingly, dogsā tongues are equipped with special receptors for water, which become more active after eating or when theyāre thirsty. Their strong sense of smell also enhances how they ātasteā. They rely on scent far more than we do to decide whatās edible or safe.
While most dogs love sweet flavors, they tend to avoid bitter, sour, or spicy foods, which is why deterrent sprays taste so unpleasant to them. So the next time your pup turns their nose up at something, itās not just pickiness. Itās their taste buds doing their job.
