Breeds that LOVE Hot Weather

Summer temperatures can be exhausting for some dogs. Many breeds have characteristics that are perfect for their original climates. Some breeds, like bulldogs and Saint Bernards, are not fans of the warmer weather, but there are seven breeds that love the hot weather and summertime.

  1. Australian Cattle Dog - Originally bred in Australia for driving cattle, this breed loves hot weather. They have short, dense coats with insulation to protect against the heat and sun.

  2. Chihuahua - These pups are from Mexico originally and are well-adapted to heat. Their small size and short coats allow them to lose heat quickly.

  3. Dalmatian - From the Adriatic Sea region, this breed was used as a carriage dog in the warm climates of the Mediterranean. They have high energy even when the weather is hot.

  4. Basenji - These dogs are native to central Africa, and consequently used to hot and humid climates. They are very clean and have minimal grooming needs.

  5. Ibizan Hound - This breed loves running and can handle a lot of exercise, even when the temps are high. Their slender bodies don’t retain excess heat.

  6. Afghan Hound - With a long flowing coat over a slender body, these dogs have protection from the sun and remain cool.

  7. Pharoah Hound - This breed is from the Maltese islands and doesn’t mind activity in hot weather. They love sunny environments and have a high tolerance for heat.

If you live somewhere where the temperatures are higher than average, consider one of these breeds or something similar that thrives in the hot weather.

Can Dogs Get Sunburns?

Pet owners always try to protect their pups and keep them safe and healthy. When it comes to the sunshine, it’s essential to know how to protect them from harmful UV rays. The quick answer is that dogs can get sunburned, and certain areas are more sensitive than others.

Most dogs are covered in fur, which is a natural protector from the sun. Keep an eye on the parts of your dog that don’t have as much hair. Vulnerable areas include their noses, eyes, lips, belly, and anywhere else you can see their skin. Watch for any redness, peeling, or blistering on those exposed areas.

If your dog does end up with a sunburn, it’s important to jump in and help them get comfortable. Applying a cold, damp cloth to affected areas can help. Your veterinarian might also have creams and medications that you can apply. Avoid using anything that is meant for humans in case some ingredients aren’t great for dogs.

To protect your pup, find a dog-friendly sunscreen. It should not contain zinc oxide or PABA because those are toxic to dogs. Use natural sunscreens and watch for reactions on your dog’s skin. Apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before heading outdoors, and don’t forget the ears and nose. Provide shady areas for your dog to hang out and escape the sun. It’s also advised to avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Keep your pup safe and healthy this summer, and be aware of their sun exposure.

Watermelon Pupsicles for Dogs

Frozen watermelon is a great treat for pups when the weather is hot. However, it’s important to remove the seeds before giving the watermelon to the dogs. This fruit is high in water content, naturally sweet, and has some essential vitamins, so it’s a healthy choice in moderation. This recipe is super easy and the perfect treat for a hot day.

You’ll need: 500 grams of watermelon (cubed and deseeded) and 200 grams of plain yogurt

  1. Blend the ingredients.

  2. Fill a silicone mold with the puree.

  3. Freeze for two to three hours and serve them to your pup cold.
