7 Must-Know Questions About Doggy Daycare
For most of us, our dogs are our babies. So, dropping them off at a new doggy daycare is a big deal. We want to be confident theyāll be well taken care of, safe, and happy. With so many options available today, how do we pick the best place for them? Here are 7 must-know questions to ask before leaving your pup off at doggy daycare.
1. Safety & Emergencies
Safety is a priority wherever you go with your pup. How does the facility handle emergencies? Make sure they have plans in place, with staff on call 24/7 and a well-stocked first aid kit. Ask about their relationship with a nearby vet for any injuries and how theyāll communicate with you during an emergency, such as natural disasters or unexpected damage to the kennel.
Story time: when I brought my two dogs to daycare, they were kenneled in separate crates. My 90-pound anxious pittie couldnāt stand being away from his sister, and he actually managed to take down the metal crate door that was enclosing him! Thankfully, the staff was amazing ā they quickly tended to his paw pounds and found a safer spot for him.
2. Outdoor Time & Set Up
Outdoor playtime is a favorite part of the day for every dog. Find out what their outdoor time looks likeāhow often do they go outside? Check the security of the fencing and if the area is free of hazards like rocks, sticks, or exposed wires, especially if your dog is notorious for trying to munch on everything in sight.
3. Spacious & Clean Facilities
Your pup deserves spacious, clean accommodations where they can move around comfortably and freely. Is the facility clean and organized, with minimal odors and a comfortable temperature? While itās tempting to judge based on aesthetics, remember that your pup doesnāt care about modern design or brightly colored walls. Instead, focus on whether the space is safe and clutter-free. A simple, open area with fewer toys and objects can often be better for play, and it helps prevent resource guarding and keeps things stress-free.
4. Staff Qualifications & Communication
The staff is responsible for taking care of your pup, so their quality can make or break the doggy daycare experience. A high staff-to-pet ratio guarantees that your dog receives individualized attention when needed, and helps maintain safety in any situation. Staff training is crucial āare they knowledgeable in basic care, canine body language, and safety procedures? Do they know how to defuse a fight before it starts, or how to handle one if it occurs?
Also, ask about the communication youāll receive, like updates or pictures. Most dog owners, myself included, love getting pictures of our pups. It reassures us that theyāre being well cared for and gives us peace of mind. Family-owned businesses usually stand out because the owners are personally invested and genuinely care about the dogs in their care.
5. Playtime & Activities
Itās nice when a daycare facility offers a range of activities, as different dogs have different energy levels and personalities. Ask about their playtime routines, including whether they provide toys or structured activities, and if thereās a designated rest area. An agility course or obstacle toys can be awesome for keeping your dog engaged and active.
6. Dog Grouping & Separation
Knowing how a facility separates dogs into different playgroups is information youāll want to find out. Most daycares divide dogs based on size, age, and temperament. For instance, small dogs might be at risk of being accidentally hurt by larger dogs, while older dogs might prefer calmer groups. However, there are exceptionsāsome smaller dogs like to play rough and might do better with the big dogs. Your insight into your dog's play style and what they can handle is really helpful, too. Sharing this information with the staff will help your dog find the perfect play fit.
7. Mealtime & Special Needs
Find out if the doggy daycare is equipped to handle special dietary needs, allergies, and medication. Be sure to provide specific instructions, whether itās about feeding techniques, dietary preferences, or even quirky habits like needing their food wet or with a side of cheese. We all know dogs have high standards when it comes to their meals!
What to Pack for Your Pupās Boarding Stay
Preparation is key to making sure your pupās stay at doggy daycare is a breeze. Hereās a list of the essentials youāll need to pack!
Dog Food and Their Bowls
Packing your dogās regular food is usually a hard one to forget. Sticking to their usual diet helps avoid digestive issuesādefinitely not something your pup wants to deal with while away from home. Bringing their bowls, especially if they love routine or need a slow feeder bowl, can also help maintain their predictability.
Leash, Collar, and Tags
Make sure to pack your dogās leash, collar, and tags. These items are needed to ensure safe and secure transport to and from doggy daycare. Double-check that the collar and tags are in good condition and have accurate contact information. Itās also wise to include an extra leash, just in case of emergencies. If your dog is microchipped, make sure the information is updated with your current contact details.
Medication
Medication is probably the most important part of your pupās care that you want to remember. Maintaining their routine and medication schedule is key to keeping them comfortable and feeling normal during their stay. Be sure to let the staff know exactly how and when to administer the medication. If your dog is accustomed to taking their meds with peanut butter, for example, changing up the method might not go over well! Make sure the quantity is enough to outlast your pupās stay!
Favorite Toys
Even though the dog boarding facility will provide toys, your pet will likely enjoy having their own favorites from home. Bringing these toys can keep your dog entertained and mentally stimulated. However, it's a good idea to reserve these toys for when your dog is playing independently or in their kennel to avoid any potential conflicts with other dogs over their favorite toys.
Bedding and Blankies
If your dog has a favorite blanket or bedding theyāre attached to, be sure to pack it. Bringing these familiar items can help keep them comfortable and provide reassurance, especially if your dog tends to be anxious. The familiar scent of home (and you) can be a great source of comfort.
