Runaway Shelter Pup Found a Safe Haven

Scout was a shelter dog who struggled with patience while waiting for a forever home, so he took matters into his own paws. One night, Scout escaped the shelter by sneaking out after dark, jumping several fences, and crossing a highway. He found his way to the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, a nursing home in the town of Bellaire, MI.

Once Scout got inside the automatic doors, he found a cozy leather couch, curled up, and drifted off to sleep. It was clear that he felt at home here, but he wasn’t the only one benefitting from this adventure. His presence had such a positive impact on so many residents and staff members. He instantly knew when someone needed a head on their lap or a gentle nudge.

Scout became a beloved member of this community and showed that he was a natural caregiver despite his past in an abusive home. It’s incredible how much dogs can make a place feel like home.

Why Dogs Choose One Human Over Another

Does your dog prefer one side of the bed over the other? Maybe they are more likely to sleep on your lap than your spouse's. It turns out that the reason is simple. Dogs are pack animals, and their relationship with each family member might differ depending on where they believe people fall in the pack. Your dog may prefer one partner or family member over another for one of these four reasons

  1. Associations - If one person is constantly the one handing out treats and the other person is doing the grooming and vet appointments, the dog is associating positive things with one person and negative with the other.

  2. Emotional bonds - Dogs may choose sides and show loyalty to certain family members. This can change over time, and dogs pick up on emotional shifts in the house.

  3. Temporary love - There are moments of excitement when it might seem like your dog is choosing someone else over you, but it’s typically a fleeting moment. It might be when their food bowl or their favorite toy comes out.

  4. Awkward odors - Dogs have a strong sense of smell, and they might pick up on certain smells that they like or ones that push them further away. It’s often something that humans cannot even pick up, but dogs can, which might affect their preferences.

If you are struggling because your dog seems to choose your partner more than you, work on your bonding with the dog. Take them for more walks and spend time playing with them. They tend to stick with the person they believe is their primary caregiver.

The Sign That Your Dog Needs A Period Costume

Many Chihuahua owners love to dress up their tiny companions. One reason is that they are always freezing because of their small size and natural habitat of the desert. But another reason is that they are adorable. You must see this Chihuahua, Cricket the Gremlin, with the fanciest 70s-inspired outfit. We hope the dog is headed to a disco.
