Roombas Are Supposed to Clean Up the Mess, Right?

Jesse Newton has a different experience with the popular robot vacuum cleaner, Roomba. He has his Roomba set to run every night at 1:30 AM while the family is sleeping. It had been working well on that schedule until one fateful night.

Newton had a new puppy, Evie, and she must have had an accident on the living room rug between midnight and 1:30 AM. The Roomba started its rotations around the house and ran over the fresh pile of poop. This event is known in their home as “Poopocalypse” or the “Pooppening.”

It didn’t end there. Newton’s four-year-old crawled into bed with them around 3 AM, and they couldn’t figure out why he smelled like poop until they walked into the living room. Between the child and the house being covered in poop, he knew that a full scrub-down of the house was in order. In the chaos, he threw the machine into the bathtub to soak before taking out the battery. Luckily, the company replaced it once he admitted what happened in his home in the middle of the night.

Newton warns other owners of the convenient little vacuum never to let it run over poop. It spread the mess over the floorboards, furniture legs, carpets, rugs, toy boxes, and everything close to the floor. But at least we can all chuckle about it now.

Four Reasons It's Important to Pick Up After Your Dog

Responsible dog owners are great at picking up after their dogs, but we’ve all seen situations where someone neglected to do their part. The facts show that it’s incredibly important to clean up after your dog. Here are four reasons why:

  1. It does not break down on its own. Dog waste can take up to 12 months to break down, but in the meantime, it’s getting carried into lakes, streams, and rivers. No one wants to swim in dog poop.

  2. There can be disease-causing bacteria and parasites. E. coli and salmonella are just two of the bacteria that are carried in dog waste. Your dog may not show symptoms, but they can spread disease to others. These can stay in the soil for years and affect the water supply.

  3. It’s common courtesy to pick up. Poop smells, and if you leave it on public property (or someone else’s private property), you’re ruining their space. Use good manners and pick up after your pup.

  4. Poop is not a fertilizer. Dogs eat a diet of mostly protein, so their waste actually works as the opposite of fertilizer. It’s acidic and can kill grass and burn the lawn. It’s a myth that leaving it helps the lawn. Cows eat plants, so it’s a different story.

Never Forget a Poop Bag

Many people reuse shopping bags when cleaning up after their dog on walks. Instead of digging around in the cabinets for the stray bags, you can create this hanging poop bag holder to help ensure you never leave home without one.

You’ll need: 1 medium/large plastic bottle or container, sandpaper or a nail file, paint of your choice, 18-20 inches of ribbon, and kitchen scissors.

  1. Clean the plastic container and remove any labels.

  2. Make two to four cuts carefully with the scissors down to the brim of the container. Cut to the same place on the brim with each cut.

  3. Cut in a circle around the brim to open up the container.

  4. Sand any rough edges down with your sandpaper/nail file.

  5. About an inch from the top, poke a hole on each side of the container.

  6. Paint the container with the color of your choosing and allow it to dry.

  7. String the ribbon through the holes and tie knots on the inside. Cut any excess ribbon and hang from a hook or door knob.

  8. Fill the container with plastic bags, and you’re ready to go.
