Family Dog Rescues Boy Trapped During Hurrican Helene

Dogs never cease to amaze us with their loyalty, intelligence, and bravery, and Tucker is no exception. This brave pup saved his 11-year-old brother after a mudslide crashed into their home during Hurricane Helene near Asheville, NC.

One minute, 11-year-old Jamie Parker was sitting on the couch with his sister and the next, he was buried under 12 feet of rubble. While Jamieā€™s grandmother and sister were visible and quickly rescued, Jamie was trapped, out of sight, and alone. But their loyal family dog, Tucker, found him, stayed by his side, and refused to let anyone forget it. Tucker barked and whined until someone understood what he was trying to signal.

Thanks to Tucker's persistence, firefighters arrived, located Jamie, and rescued him. Jamie is now on the road to recovery at Atrium Health Levine Childrenā€™s Jeff Gordon Childrenā€™s Center.

Jamie told his local news, ā€œI probably would have died if it wasnā€™t for Tucker.ā€ Now, heroic Tucker is being cared for by a compassionate nurse while the family rebuilds their lives after losing everything in the storm. Dogs truly are amazing.

5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Calm on Halloween

Halloween is a fun night to look forward toā€”but for us dog parents, itā€™s not just about us; we have our pups to think about too. All the knocking and doorbell ringing during trick-or-treating can make for a stressful night for our dogs. But donā€™t worry! There are ways to keep Halloween stress-free and help our pups stay calm during the Halloween chaos.

Create a Quiet Space: Set up a calm room away from the door where they can relax. A comfy bed, toys, and even some calming music are all great.

Exercise First: Tire your dog out before the Halloween excitement begins! A long walk or a fun play session can help them relax and hopefully settle into a nice, long nap. I've noticed a huge difference with my anxious pupā€”when we wear him out before a stressful situation, he might still be anxious at first, but heā€™s too tired to stay worked up for long.

Reward Calm Behavior: Keep treats handy to reward your dog when they stay calm. Positive reinforcement helps your dog associate the constant knocking or doorbell ringing with good things (like yummy treats!).

Tell Them to Sit and Stay: Itā€™s okay if you didnā€™t have time to train ahead of timeā€”especially if this is the first time youā€™ve thought about it, and Halloween is tomorrow! But every dog knows ā€œsit.ā€ Try your best to have them sit and stay as you walk toward the door. If they listen, praise their good behavior for being the best boy (or girl!) and reward them.

Get Them Out of Sight: You know your pup best, and if you think all these other tips wonā€™t work, getting them out of sight of the action is a solid plan. Consider using a baby gate to confine your pup to a smaller area where they canā€™t see out the windows or reach the front door.

What tips do you have for a calm Halloween night with your pup? Weā€™d love to hear them!

Blueberry and Yogurt Monster Eye Dog Treats

Our dogs will undoubtedly sniff out all the Halloween candy coming into the house. While most Halloween candy is off-limits for them, they donā€™t have to miss out! Letā€™s make a Halloween treat just for them. With only two simple ingredients, these treats are ridiculously easy to make and packed with antioxidants and probiotics.

What Youā€™ll Need:

  • 1 cup blueberries

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt

  • Carob chips (optional for extra spooky eyeballs!)

How to Make:

  1. Dunk each blueberry in yogurt, making sure theyā€™re fully coated.

  2. Place the yogurt-covered blueberries on a parchment-lined tray.

  3. If youā€™re feeling spooky, pop a carob chip on top for that eerie eyeball look!

  4. Freeze until solid, then serve to your pup!

Your pup will love this fun and healthy Halloween treat made just for them! If you give them a try, let us know how they turn out!
