Many dogs love a swimming pool, and Duke definitely falls in that category. But in his house, there are rules on when he can jump in and get his swimming exercise. Duke decided he didn’t care. His owner, Kimberley, found him in the pool at 7 AM.

She shared the video on TikTok where she’s telling Duke to get out of the pool. Instead of listening, he chooses to push himself out to the middle of the pool. He cannot be bothered with rules and restrictions. Clearly, the TikTok community loves him because the video has racked up over 50 million views!

Not every dog loves swimming, but some breeds naturally love the water. These seven dog breeds are at the top of the list of canine water lovers. These are usually retrievers, rescue dogs, and hunters with bodies built for wet activities.

1. Labrador Retriever - Labs love playing in the water. They have double coats and a unique tail that can help propel them while swimming. With their high energy, they love activities like dock jumping and water retrieval.

2. Golden Retriever - Goldens love playing in the water like their lab cousins. They have a dense, water-repellant outer coat and have been used for waterfowl hunting in the past.

3. Portuguese Water Dog - This breed assisted fishermen in Portugal by retrieving lost gear and swimming things to and from boats. Their webbed feet help them swim and maneuver in the water. 

4. Newfoundland - The gentle giants have been helping in the water throughout history, especially with rescue operations. They can stay calm and follow directions during water rescues. Even when they aren’t rescuing, they still love swimming and splashing around.

5. Chesapeake Bay Retriever - This breed was developed to help hunt waterfowl in the United States. They have an oily coat that repels water and keeps them warm and dry even while swimming. 

6. Irish Water Spaniel - This is one of the oldest and most distinctive water dogs. They can expertly navigate in the water and are very skilled swimmers.

7. Poodle - These smart dogs were originally water retrievers with a moisture-resistant coat. They love water sports and swimming competitions. Their coat helps protect them in cold waters. 

Whether you get one of these breeds or not, you can find out if your dog loves water by slowly introducing it while it is supervised and on a leash. If you’re concerned about its ability to swim, pick up a dog lifejacket to keep it safe.

Some breeds are more water averse, but they might just splash in the shallow end on a hot day, so try it without pushing them to do something they don’t feel comfortable or safe with.

If your pup has a blast in the pool, there are a few DIY toys you can make for them to use this summer. These options can help them float around alongside the family and enjoy the cool water on a hot, sunny day.

• Dog raft that doesn’t deflate - Use five large pool noodles, two medium noodles, 6 feet of PVC pipe, and a nylon cord. Place the five large noodles next to each other, and then place the PVC pipe inside medium noodles and tie them together. 

• Floatie Runway - Overlap floating mats in a runway from one side of the pool to the other and see if your pup can make it across without falling in. 

• DIY pool ramp - It’s hard for dogs to get out of the pool sometimes, so by stacking mats at the entrance, they’ll be able to walk out of the pool on the floating mats, and you won’t have to lift them out.

• Plastic bottle dog float - If you’re just learning whether or not your dog likes the water and you don’t want to purchase a lifejacket, make a plastic bottle floatie. You just need several large empty plastic bottles. Try the bottles loosely to your dog’s sides to help keep them afloat while they figure it out. 

• Kiddie pool float—Toss your old kiddie pool into the larger pool and put your dog inside. The float acts like a small boat, allowing your dog to float around the pool without having to paddle.
