People teach their dog to sit; it's a trick. I've been sitting my whole life, and a dog has never looked at me as though he thought I was tricky."

How to Be Safe with Candles Around Your Dog

Candles provide a nice mood in our living spaces, but how do dogs feel about them? Thanks to their sensitive noses, sometimes scents are uncomfortable for dogs. It’s important to supervise dogs when candles are lit because they are an open flame. There are also some other tips we recommend to keep pups safe around candles.

  1. Choose the right candle. Find candles made with natural wax, like beeswax, soy, or vegetables.

  2. Burn the candle in the right place. Make sure there’s no danger of a tail wagging into the candle or a way they could hurt themselves or knock it over.

  3. Find candles specifically for pet aromatherapy. Choose scents like vanilla, lavender, and musk to help neutralize pet-related smells.

  4. Be mindful of essential oils. Avoid birch, tea tree, wintergreen, cinnamon, citrus, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, and ylang ylang. These essential oils can be irritating for pups. Check with your vet if you have a specific oil that you want to use with the dog in the house.

  5. Consider an alternative. If your dog has wheezing symptoms or reactions to candles, switch to an air purifier, an ultrasonic diffuser, or potpourri.

15 Smells that Dogs Do Not Like

A dog’s nose is thousands of times better than a human’s. We all have smells that we don’t love, but what about dogs? We want them to be comfortable, and candles can’t always cover up smells that might repel them. Some scents are even toxic, so it's important to be aware.

There are 15 scents that dogs do not love and might be uncomfortable with.

  • Citrus scents

  • Vinegar

  • Hot peppers

  • Ground spices

  • Mustard oil

  • Coffee grounds

  • Mothballs

  • Ammonia

  • Perfume

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • Nail polish

  • Cleaning products

  • Mint oil

  • Citronella oil

  • Tea tree oil

Avoid these scents and products in your home to help your pup stay more comfortable in their surroundings.

Missing Pup is Found With a Strange Pack

When a husky went missing from its family home in Kamchatka, Russia, its owner got creative with the tools he had at his disposal. He sent a drone and searched for the pup in the land surrounding his home.

Since then, the video has gone viral for an interesting reason. The dog was found by the drone, but the owner was pretty surprised. He saw the pup hanging out with three wild bears. Watch the video for yourself!
