Autumn Walk Safety Tips For Dogs

Crisp air and colorful leaves make fall a perfect time for dog walks, but the season also comes with hidden risks. Adjusting your routine and staying alert can help keep pups safe as the days get shorter.

Earlier sunsets mean evening strolls may now happen in the dark. Experts suggest moving walks to brighter parts of the day and using reflective gear for both you and your dog. A reflective collar or vest can make a big difference in visibility.

Nature itself can pose hazards. Conkers and acorns are toxic if eaten, and wet leaf piles may harbor mold and bacteria. Even common gardening tools, like slug pellets, contain chemicals that can be fatal to dogs if ingested.

Ticks remain active into autumn, so a quick post-walk check is essential. And don’t forget comfort. Smaller pups or short-haired breeds may appreciate a cozy layer when the chill sets in.

Finally, keep an eye out for antifreeze spills near cars. Its sweet taste can tempt dogs, but it’s unsafe. A little planning makes fall walks just as fun as summer ones, without the hidden surprises.

Dog of the Day, Farfalle

Meet Farfalle, Sarah’s spunky Italian Greyhound, who lives life with equal parts elegance and chaos. She may be small, but she’s mighty when it comes to fetch, sunbathing, and getting into things she probably shouldn’t.

Farfalle’s favorite partner in crime? Her cat sister Sushi, who doesn’t mind the occasional chase or cuddle. When she’s not on the move or sneaking into mischief, Farfalle loves stretching out in a sunny spot or tagging along on walks with her family.

Thanks to Sarah for sharing Farfalle’s playful personality with us! Want to see your dog featured in the Daily Dig? Send a photo and a few fun facts. We’d love to share their story.

Seasonal Grooming Tips

Autumn is more than sweater weather. It’s also a reset button for your pup’s grooming routine. After months of hot pavement, pollen, and strong sun, many dogs benefit from a little extra care as the seasons change.

Paw pads are often the first to show wear. If your dog spent summer days on sand, concrete, or trails, they may have dry or cracked pads. Gentle cleaning after walks and a dog-safe balm can soothe irritation, while more serious cracks may need vet attention.

Skin allergies also tend to flare during fall, especially when pollen and dust cling to fur. Regular baths with hypoallergenic shampoo can help reduce itching and hot spots. A good brushing routine also removes allergens and keeps shedding under control.

Sun-bleached coats are common at this time of year. Brushing away dead hair, using color-enhancing shampoos, and adding a coat conditioner can bring back shine more quickly. Some vets even recommend omega-rich supplements for coat health.

With a few seasonal tweaks, your dog will be more comfortable and ready to enjoy those crisp fall walks by your side.
