Today Is National Rescue Dog Day

National Rescue Dog Day is celebrated every year on May 20, and it is all about giving shelter dogs a little extra love. The day was created to encourage adoption from shelters, rescues, and pounds while also recognizing the people who care for dogs still waiting for homes.

There are many simple ways to take part, even if you are not ready to adopt. You can visit a local shelter, share adoptable dogs online, donate supplies, volunteer, or ask about fostering a dog who needs a temporary place to land. Fostering can be especially helpful because it gives dogs a calmer home environment while opening space for another animal in need.

For anyone thinking about bringing home a rescue dog, the best first step is learning what kind of personality, size, and energy level fits your life. Shelter and rescue teams can help match you with a dog’s needs, quirks, and routines. For the right pup, that thoughtful match can be the start of a safe, happy second chance.

Why Every Dog Needs An Emergency Bag

A pet emergency bag is exactly what it sounds like: a ready-to-grab kit with the supplies your dog may need if you have to leave home quickly. It can be helpful during storms, power outages, evacuations, unexpected travel, or even a last-minute trip to the vet.

A good bag usually includes a few days of food, bottled water, collapsible bowls, medications, waste bags, a leash, a harness, a blanket, and copies of important records. It is also smart to include your dog’s microchip information, vaccination records, a recent photo, and your vet’s contact details.

The goal is not to pack for every possible situation. It is to make a stressful moment a little easier. When your dog’s essentials are already in one place, you can focus on keeping them safe, calm, and close by your side.

What Should Be in Your Pet Emergency Bag?

If you had seconds to respond to a pet emergency, would you be ready?

A well-stocked pet emergency bag can save valuable time—and potentially your pet’s life.

Here’s what to include:

  • Emergency vet and poison control contact info

  • Gauze, bandages, gloves

  • Saline or wound care products, ear flush, eye flush

  • A leash or carrier

  • And most importantly: activated charcoal like ReadyRESCUE™

Activated charcoal works like a sponge for poisons, binding toxins before it’s absorbed into the body. But not all charcoal is created equal.

Inferior products drastically underdose—like using a sponge that’s simply too small to be effective.

Most products have a short (1-2 year) shelf life—meaning they may not be ready when you need them most.

ReadyRESCUE™ has a 5 year shelf life and is the ONLY CLINICALLY PROVEN option for pet owners, delivering true veterinary-strength dosing in an easy-to-administer format. It is also the only Activated Charcoal available to pet owners that is strong enough and easy enough to be used in over 1500 veterinary hospitals today.

It’s not just something to have.

It’s something you hope you never need—but will be grateful you do.

Sunny The Rescue Dog Gets Adopted

Sunny may have been shy, but her gentle heart was easy to spot. The rescue dog recently won over viewers after a shelter volunteer shared a video of her calm, sweet personality and the happy update that she had been adopted.

In the clip, Sunny sat quietly in her kennel before trusting the volunteer enough to come out for a walk. As she moved through the shelter, she stopped to greet other dogs and spent extra time by the puppy kennels. Her little kisses through the bars showed just how soft and nurturing she could be.

For shy shelter dogs, those small moments can mean everything. Sunny’s story is a sweet reminder that some pups just need patience, kindness, and the right person to notice the love they have been waiting to give.
